Layer management wishes

Hello!

  • OneLayerOn
Could this command please support sublayers, optionally? Meaning when I select a parent layer and invoke the command, the child layers stay on.
Could be an extra menu entry in the Layer panel RMB menu: “One Layer On with Children”.
Additionally, it would be helpful if the command worked with more that one layer.
If this was possible, this layer selection popup window would become obsolete. Simply the layers selected in the panel would be ‘isolated’.

  • Isolate Layer instead of OneLayerOn?
After OneLayerOn, how to go back to the old layerstate? (Save a Layer State, I know. Too many clicks)
A LayerIsolate/LayerUnisolate would be nice, (in addition to the existing object isolate/unisolate). Could be scriptable, of course.

  • The layer panel should support drag&drop, just like the Layer States panel since recently.

  • It would be handy if multiple layers could be turned on/off by holding the mouse button and moving the the cursor over other layer lightbulbs (as seen in various other 2d/3d applications).

Thanks!

While layer management is under discussion, let’s talk about what happens when a user tries to turn off a parent layer that has the active layer as a sublayer. Right now Rhino throws up a message box at the center of the screen, which is normally many mouse-miles away from the layer tab and the only way of responding is to drive over there and click the OK button and then drive all the way back to the layer display to do it “right”.

This is all well and good unless you are the type of modeler who does it often because his/her mind is on some more important aspect of the work. Then it gets annoying and workflow upsetting.

Even if McNeel developers haven’t the interest in finding a really good way of handling this situation, could you please make two minor improvements:

  1. Locate the popup somewhere near the layer tab.

  2. Allow a click on a layer “active” choice to dismiss the warning popup (in addition to the current functionality with the OK button) and make the new choice active. If the new choice has the same problem as the first, then popup the warning again.

I would love to see some better management with blocks and block layers since no one asked.

would it be crazy to suggest an entire new panel just for blocks?
