Latest WIP is crashing - how to get a previous version back?

It’s crashing after all stuff is loaded and complete shut down the Rhino task without any message. I would like to work on my project again.

Also in safe mode crashing before I can start to select the loading of plugins.

I now have the previous install file, but when I try to install it, I get a message that a newer version is installed and I can change that in the Control Panel items. But I’m afraid that all my settings, toolbars and integration of plugins will be destroyed with it. What can I do? Is there a trick to install a previous version over the new one?

After the update this week, my scheme with my personalized workspace (imported from V7) also crashes immediately on opening without a crash report dialog. There is a DotNetCrash file left on the desktop. I sent this in to tech yesterday. Using the default workspace opens fine. Don’t know if it is related, as @Micha seems to be crashing even in safe mode.

Version from today installed and it’s still crashing.

Which files I need to backup from the current install to keep keyboard shortcuts, … ? I would like to deinstall Rhino 8 and install an old working version again.

Hi Micha -

Does this leave a DotNetCrash file on your desktop?

To install an older version, you need to uninstall the current version. This will not/should not mess with customizations. We do it all the time to find out which specific older version caused an unintended change and I have personally never lost customizations that I care about in this process.

That being said, it is very likely that it’s something specific to your setup that is causing this crash, so you’d probably want to start from the defaults.
As a first step, I would exit Rhino and rename the following directory:

%appdata%\McNeel\Rhinoceros\8.0\settings

to something like

%appdata%\McNeel\Rhinoceros\8.0\MichaBackup

and then restart Rhino.
Does that make Rhino start?

Mine is still crashing today with my custom workspace after having installed the latest version. (Default is OK)

RhinoDotNetCrash.txt (23.8 KB)

I sent the DotNetCrash file to the tech support per email yesterday.

I did it now and Rhino WIP starts without problems.

Finally I found it helps to disable containers.xml and Rhino create a new, clean one. Shortcuts are kept.

I repaired my setup now and hope it will work.

Thank you very much for your help.

Did that and Rhino then opened, but instead of opening with my custom workspace (.rui imported from V7) it opens with default.

The crash text file indicates a crash when trying to render a button image. Can you zip up the files in your %APPDATA%\McNeel\Rhinoceros\8.0\settings\Scheme__Default directory so I can try to reproduce?

The list of linked RUI files is store in containers.xml so deleting it removed the reference to your custom RUI file. You can attach your RUI in Options/Toolbars.

I’m having the same issue with WIP crashing. I’ve tried renaming the folder as suggested by
Settings folder.zip (25.8 KB)
Wim and doing a clean install of the latest WIP download. I’ve attached the crash file that was created on the desktop and the settings folder, but having a default installation also seems to crash - it’ll load files OK (and save out as V7!) but there doens’t seem to be a specific command that causes it to crash, just a small white box that pops up with no text/images, then dead.
RhinoDotNetCrash.txt (20.0 KB)

Thanks
Deri

Hi Deri -

That sounds like a completely different issue then.
Please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here.
-wim

Based on both the RhinodotNetCrash.txt it is due to missing icons from the resources assembly. Certain panels etc will cause this crash while trying to show their icons.

AFAICT it is the same issue, not different.

Quick update - loaded up a chunky model after doing the system info command and was able to navigate and do stuff like clipping planes, change display view type, draw lines etc fine. Clicked off Rhino to post on here, then when I went back to Rhino, instant crash.
I’ve managed to repeat this:

  1. Start Rhino, works fine.
  2. Swap focus to other program (scrolling in a web page seems fine, but typing in here not). Tried with Chrome, file explorer, PDF viewer.
  3. Back to Rhino - crash.

Hope that’s of some use?

Can you try using this build from today and see if it works: https://files.mcneel.com/dujour/exe/20230503/rhino_en-us_8.0.23123.20305.exe
I was looking at the crash text and can see what the issue is but it seems to be resolved in our current internal build which you can download using the above link. It is notification warning that is looking for a image that was moved.

Mac is crashing

Hi Martin -

I see a crash report from you running 8.0.23122.12306. That is an earlier version than the one that John pointed to for Windows. The macOS equivalent of that one would be: https://files.mcneel.com/dujour/dmg/rhino_wip_8.0.23123.20306.dmg
Does that make a difference?
-wim

I did try it you will receive a crash from me
