Is there a Rhino8 library of rendering light settings to pick from?

Hi,
wanting a quick way into a studio set up with two brollies 45 deg at subject, either side of camera (which is datum), about 2 or 3 ft higher than camera, in a 1:4 ratio of light.

a classic set up , for shooting scale models, or humans.

zero experience and now with V8, hope there are some easy grab options,

How is this applied, perhaps from a drop down list ?

any vids welcome.

Can I apply these using setObjectDisplayMode - rendered when working in Shaded mode, as I set my meshes to that in shaded mode, best find/advice of the year.

Cheers
Steve

You have a message from me a long time ago, that you never responded to that showed something similar.

I think it was December.

Anyway, you cam make an easy start for Raytrace view by selecting a new environment in the Render panel. Rhino has various inbuilt Studios that are pre-defined.

They don’t provide specific umbrella setups, but are a set of HDRIs that provide the very efffect you are looking for to a broad extent.

Hi @Steve1
There are so many studio HDRi´s out there to choose from, many of them free. You can of course go about this manually, setting up rectangular lights etc., but using HDRi’s is just so quick and convenient. Here’s one example that should be close to what you asking:

and the resulting lighting is something like this on a random chair:

To make it even easier for you, here is the HDRi linked to by @Normand in a file you can use as template (model units: millimiter, change before importing any of your models into this):

default_mm__studiosmall09.3dm.zip (16.8 MB)

Or if you feel comfortable enough to import just the Rhino environment file:

studio_small_09_4k.renv.zip (17.0 MB)

Note that both files are ZIP files: uncompress them before using!

These are fairly large as the HDRi image itself is already 18MB in disk size.

When you want to change the orientation of the lighting without changing the model orientation go to the Environments panel, click on the environment you want to change and look for the Rotation section. You can then use either the circular widget or the number input to change the orientation of the environment.

I wish Rhino came with a little more default content. Lots of the HDRI’s barely seem to have any variation.

Rhino 8 ships with 51 environment files which download on demand. They’re best used, in my opinion, as Reflection and/or Skylight environments and with the ground plane utilizing a material versus shadow only.

If you have a scene where you aren’t seeing an impact when changing these, I can take a look, just mention me in a post. My general workflow is to use these and then accent the lighting set up with a couple rectangular lights if needed.

Hi,
Wow !!
I am missing out on all this, I sense there are wonderful objects to be found, if only I can find the entrance to the Pyramid !
please point me to an official getting started in rendered light scenes video where I could use some of these on an stl model pilot figure please. It is a scan and without colours as such, and needs to be a medium grey with real life shadows from lighting above and in front of it.

Are these used in the constructuio shaded mode or only after model finished ?

I need realistic lighting when also building models and altering/adding to meshes.

Cheers

Steve

There’s… the tutorials…

Particularly here it is the “Environment Basics” video.
