I need some rendering tips - My renders look like

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’ll see if I can attach the actual file. I’ve also yet to attempt to render on a different computer to see if that produces a better result. I thought my bump map might be the issue but I’ve played around with that as well…

This is literally the render I’m getting (default Rhino renderer):

Using the Rhino Legacy Render looks a bit better:

But the render preview actually looks way better than both (like way better, note that I’ve been experimenting with a couple different bump maps):

REBAR - Texture Maps Working File.3dm (2.5 MB)

A little digging and I think I underestimated how simple a bump map is, and possibly confusing a bump map with a displacement map.

Instead of using the Rhino Custom material type set the type to Physically Based material.

It should be clear from this capture which of the bars has its material converted to Physically Based (just switch the type to Physically based, no need to create manually a new material and set the textures and colours)

I made no other changes to your file besides the camera pose and the material type switch.

Yep! Made a world of difference. By coincidence I happened to be using pb materials in previous renders that turned out much better. At this point I’m wondering if it’s ever worth not using them… I’m sure there’s situations.

Anyhow, thanks very much! This opens up a lot of possibilities
