How to use an iterative solver inside a loop (Octopus loop?)

From what I have read, the octopus loop function can include an iterative solver like Galapagos or Octopus. This is mentioned a few places around this forum and on the description on the food4rhino download page, but I cannot find any description that says how.

Any method I have tried, comes back to the same problem: The solvers need an input variable like a gene pool or slider to work. The input variable cannot(or can it some way?) be part of the loop.

So instead of trying to optimise the input variable for each instance of the loop, one at a time, it tries to optimise that one external variable for some kind of average of all instances of the loop resulting from it(at least that is what it looks like). Have I missed some obvious method to make this work?
