I’m not sure whether I’m missing something here but the grid is acting strangely.
I am in rendered view.
Display Mode says Use Document Settings
Document Settings says Show Gridlines
The grid doesn’t show from above, just from below.

This may be due to the default ground plane display in Rendered mode. I see you’re using a display mode that is a copy of Rendered. Go into the Rendering Panel and uncheck Ground Plane from the the Backdrop settings. Any luck?
Yes, that does it. I actually don’t want the grid, so didn’t think about it, but then was surprised by its appearance from below.
this isn’t the situation in Rhino5 and I think it may cause confusion as a default.
