Drawing asymmetrical flower

Hi
I have a flower / flower shoot made in clay, which I would like to sketch 1:1 in Rhino. It’s 2cm(L)*2cm(w)*1cm(h)
I’m new to the program, and can’t really figure out how to start. Can anyone help me out with some suggestions?
Kind regards

Hi @Tine_Tourell_Søderbe
That’s no easy task for a beginner, but go for it and jump in the deep end! :muscle: My best piece of advice would be to go for Sub-d modeling, as it’s well suited for something this organic. In order to get started, no better place than the resident Sub-D-teacher/design-oracle @theoutside (well, his real name is Kyle) and his hand tutorial - look here, give it a shot - and if you get stuck, feel free to post what you’ve got, and I’m sure somebody will try to help you out :slight_smile: Also, if you look at Rhino’s Youtube channel, there are a quite a few more Sub-D related videos - check them out as well!

subd for sure, and look at each petal as a separate part, then lap/ overlap them as needed to get your effect. keep your topology very simple.

watch the rule of three and the hand video-

each “petal” should only have about 4 faces total… you can get all the shape you need from that, then thicken subd to get your thickness.

give it a go and post your results- I’m happy to help along the way.

Thanks a lot. I just saw the “hand video” - makes a lot of sense. Such a good idea to start the same way. I’ll try to jump in the deep and get startet :muscle:

Really helpful with the hand video. 1 question: what is your “smooth” setting? I’m referring to the part where you go from sharp edges / curves to smoothing the hand. My flower doesn’t get as rounded as yours, so I assume it has something to do with my “smooth” settings
Thanks (:slight_smile:

Hej Tine -

In Rhino, there are only the non-smooth and the smooth versions of a SubD object.

You might want to upload your 3dm file to get help figuring out why that is.

Hi, if you are going to sketch it, then you can put the picture in the orientation you chose to draw it in. Then you can use some of the curve drawing tools available to eventually trace over it, whether it be in a plan view or a side view. Is that what you are asking?—-Mark

Since there are not degrees of smoothness in any settings for subd - I’m guessing you have creases… select all and uncrease

What about using photogrammetry, and then soften the mesh with Grasshopper?

Maybe i did something wrong then. I tried to follow your “hand tutorial” and do the same for the flower. When wanting to smoothen it, like you do with the “hand” to make it more round than sharp/straight lines, it looks like this

@cucumber
Could be an option, thanks. But i’ve never used grasshopper before. So i would like to learn Rhino a bit better, before moving on (:

Hi Tine -

Where in Kyle’s video is he using the Smooth command?
To go from the the non-smooth version to the smooth version of a SubD object, you need to use the SubDDisplayToggle command, which should be mapped to the Tab key by default.

@wim
Oh no, you’re right. I misunderstod. He talks about smoothening 9:50mins in, but now I get that it’s just the “tab” key and not actually writing “smooth” in the command line. Thanks a lot

You would only use it to smooth the mesh. I think that’s not so complicated. Alternatively, you could use MeshLab for it.
