Detailed parametric windows - Is it possible? Has it already been done?

Is it possible to create a grasshopper (or other, like visualarq perhaps) window of wood frame constructions wherein you specific every detail including the

  • window style,
  • depth/height/width,
  • muntins,
  • casing,
  • trim/crowns on the inside and different for exterior,
  • etc

And then ability to generate accurate live section details from it WITH dimensions and notes? I know, it’s a lot, but this would be immensely valuable.

What would it take to create a script (?) that would allow me to make such detailed window models? Is anyone here sufficiently experienced to create something like this? If so, how many hours of work would this be to make?

hello
what a nice question! any clue ? searching for the same thing

Hi, definitely possible, but it might require some time to develop.

Take a look at my setup - it’s less detailed, but sufficient for my use cases. You can go as deep into the details as needed.

Created in Grasshopper and used as a VisualARQ Grasshopper Styles Window.

Cheers,

Michal

Hey @PeterB,

I actually implemented a very similar workflow for a company that manufactures door frames. We spent about four weeks developing a prototype. I can’t share all the details here, but you can view some animations on my site.

In my experience, most companies underestimate how many variations their products can support and how much manual, on-the-fly tweaking they’re doing today. Once you’ve done the preparatory work—defining all the parameters, templates and rules—a project like this can be executed very rapidly. It is, however, difficult to provide a reliable cost or time estimate without knowing the full scope of variation options you need to cover.

Hopefully that helps give you a sense of what’s involved!

I will get a look! thanks for the sharing
Personnaly, I think i will maybe try an hybrid workflow with rhino inside revit, even if I don’t really like this program it seems to be not that bad for detailling ..
