Custom Cage edit

Hi David - the using pre-deformed cages is on the pile - a long-standing wish - I do not know if that means it is hard/impossible, or there is not enough clamor for it.

RH-2584 Pre-deformed cages do not work

How long is the original captive object available? Until the object is released from CageEdit?

It’s a hell of a good idea. Modifying in just a box is a huge absence.

@pascal I think I must have imagined this had been fixed - see below. I flowed a cage object I created with the Cage command, with Flow. I use it as a selection for a control in CageEdit command, and it performs the deformation made on the box so far (even though it has not been a control before). Was it something similar that was fixed?

This would be a big capability. FlowAlongSurface/Flow/other UDT tools to a standard cage box, to then manipulate something else further.

Count my vote for this.
It makes no sense to try to morph a banana with a rectangular cage.

I guess that cage edit would be perfect to edit Spongebob squarepants, but for most of the shapes you’d want to edit in Rhino, it’s just not very practical.

I’m quite late to this conversation, but it should be rather simple to create a workaround by constructing an inverse cage. the idea is this: you have an object, and you create an independent cage C. you fit that C to your object, and and then you create an inverse cage C_inv that basically inverses any translation of the cage points. you then apply C_inv to your object and it should theoretically “boxify” your object. Then apply C to the boxy version of your object which should bring it back to its original shape.

might be a fun coding project.

anyway, this is just speculation

Me too :face_holding_back_tears:

Someone tell em to come back n’ teach us more stuff. :face_holding_back_tears:

:joy:

This cage edit thing has been on my mind more and more over time. This stuff is exciting :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s important to me to have this power on polysrf’s too :face_holding_back_tears: :beers:
