Create file for 3d printing

I’ve been using Rhino for a good while, but never had a reason to investigate 3d printing. Now I have. Can anyone recommend basic settings or a good tutorial? I don’t have an image yet. Just want to learn the ins and outs.

Thank you. That first playlist looks like what I’m after.

don’t ignore the other two…

all that info will help you handle all your 3d printing needs-

Thanks. I’ve done a lot of drawing with Rhino and done some things with surfaces, but I am a complete beginner with 3d printing. Got to start somewhere.

I’ve done one file and sent it to a friend with a 3D printer. My file was in inches. He software seemed to think it was in millimeters. Is there any way to specify when I export? I haven’t found anything.

STL files don’t have units. Just have your friend scale it up by 25.4.

Thanks.

It may sound flippant, but…yeah, STLs don’t have units, the slicer might have the option to switch units, but it’s just something people doing this should be able to handle, the conversion factor is just 25.4, or 1/25.4 to go the other way.

Not flippant at all. It was something I didn’t know and needed to. Right now I’m just working with a friend. If I get to the point of sending a file to a business I see that I need to send along some kind of drawing or specs to show dimensions of finished part.

If you’re in America, they’re going to assume it’s supposed to be in inches. I’ve been getting things printed since last century and wasn’t aware that “most slicers” assume mm until I had my own.
