Bug: Dimension Lines Fly Off

@fsalla @enric
Please see video below. Following a short description of the bug:

  • Dimension lines are placed on layout, snapped to objects
  • Activate detail view by double clicking
  • Deactivate detail view by double clicking
  • Several dimensions loose their object connection and one end flies off
  • Undo fixes the disconnected dim lines

I suspect VisualArq, because I can only replicate it with VA walls. Please see the attached file to replicate the problem with above steps. The red dim line in the file flies off.

Hi @silvano,

Dimensions cannot be linked to VisualARQ objects yet. However, I think they shouldn’t fly off as shown in your file, so I’ll report the issue to see if something can be done about this.

@silvano this is a Rhino bug, (reported already here Dimension Shift With Detail Window Activation/Deactivation - #19 by Eugen) and also notified to McNeel: https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-65652

It happens with blocks, and therefore with VA objects too (which are also blocks).
It seems to happen when the osnap Int is activated.

@fsalla Thanks for clarifying this. We will stop using intersection snaps (since the targeted release for this fix is 8.x only) and probably have to go back to other software again.

Dimensions and blocks, with layouts and documentation, the darkest places in Rhino for years - besides being otherwise such a great piece of software. I guess you know what I mean. If you have any possibility to convince people at McNeel to rework them from the ground up, please do so. Since Asuni is providing a plugin for the AEC industry, I think it is vital for you, that Rhino improves substantially in those areas. I could add a list of threads on this forum to support the argument, also showing great solutions from other programs.

@dale (since you are the assignee of this bug). To draw a comparison: Imagine Visual Studio randomly changes a few lines of code when you open and close a file without giving you any indication that this happened. You only realize, e.g. that Breps are not working anymore after you shipped (we have no tests in architecture). Documentation and dimensions in the AEC are unfortunately still part of contracts and are still used to build very expensive things. Those bugs, which seem not severe from a software perspective, are disastrous from an AEC perspective. They can bring down your business. A QMS to catch them all is unrealistic and too time consuming.

With VisualArq becoming better and better, we were hoping to switch more projects to VA/Rhino, but the above is another no-go for this.

Please excuse the rant. No need for answers.

Hi Silvano -

This issue was fixed on December 9th and the fix is available in the latest Rhino 7 Release Candidate for SR14. Alternatively, you can wait for the final SR14 to be released - which, if all goes as planned, should be next week.

Hi @silvano,

We don’t mind the rants. The issue you mentioned has been in Rhino for a couple of releases but never reported. As @wim says, the fix is available today in the SR14 RC.

Thanks,

– Dale

@dale @wim many thanks for the quick response. Great news that the fix is already checked in. Looking forward to get it through the release candidate update. It’s awesome, that this came right in time - you seem to read your customers mind  Thanks.

@dale @wim @fsalla I am sorry to report, that the bug still exists. Please see vid below.

  • The green object is a sectioned VisualArq column, using point snap
  • The lavender colored object is a normal brep, using end snap

I wanted to export the objects for you, but in the exported file I cannot point snap to the center of the column anymore. This works only in the original file.

Hi Silvano -

That sounds like something else that should be looked into. Please post that file with the exported objects.

Can you make a new file that behaves like that? If not, please upload your file on Rhino - Upload to Support and mention the url of this thread in the comments field.
