Bongo 3.0 WIP 19 Now Available

Hi all,

** PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS WORK IN PROGRESS SOFTWARE **

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Work-In-Progress versions are not production ready and may hang or crash.

Bongo 2.0 users are encouraged to download and try this WIP release of the animation plug-in for Rhino 8, Bongo 3.0.

Bongo 3.0 WIP 19 is now available from Rhino - Download - Bongo for Windows WIP

Rhino versions supported: Beta testing Bongo 3.0 is limited to Bongo 2.0 users. Bongo 3.0 requires a Bongo 2.0 license key. Latest version of Rhino 8 is required to install Bongo 3.0 and can be downloaded from:
Rhino 8 for Windows

Changes:

  • Bongo UI updated with new icons
  • New toolbar
  • Rhino 8 support incl. Darkmode (Rhino 7 is no longer supported)
  • Physics/Connections solvers freezing Rhino -problem has been solved
  • Physics/Connections solvers can be canceled with pressing Esc
  • ā€œConvert path to curve constraintā€ -option added to the Constraints section in Object/View Properties
  • View and Object Properties now look similar
  • The Constraints are included in the View Properties instead of having their own tab
  • Bug fixes

Notes: This is the current work-in-progress release of Bongo 3.0 for Rhino. The product is in the very early stages of development and will probably change a great deal before release. This may include the file format, so please do not rely on Bongo 3.0 models working in the future. Bongo 3.0 will read Bongo 2.0 files, but will save Bongo 3.0 data only. This data cannot be read by Bongo 2.0, so please backup any files before using them in Bongo 3.0.

Please note: Rhino 7 is no longer supported!

I used Bongo 1.0 back in the day. I was searching ā€˜constraints’ this morning, and stumbled on this.

I haven’t used it in probably over ten years though.

What’s changed? @theoutside Gimmie links :face_holding_back_tears: :coffee: videos? :upside_down_face: sry i’m being lazy atm, I’ll read more about this soon :slightly_smiling_face:

A lot has changed since Bongo 1.
For the Bongo 3 WIP the new big features are the Connections and Physics.
Here’s a few videos that was done earlier with the Bongo 3 WIP:

Unbound1
Spring Example
Ball Pusher
Snowman

I’m looking forward to spending some time playing with Bongo 3… I hope it is more intuitive than Bongo 2. Even doing this simple bifold leaf door felt difficult.

Can Bongo 3 render to V-Ray?

Bongo 3 WIP and V-Ray aren’t yet compatible. Here’s a discussion on the issue:

Looks fantastic - how far away is the mac version?

The C++ SDK is still to be ported to the Rhino for Mac version and before that is done we’re not able to start the work. So at the moment we’re just focusing on the Windows version.

This looks very promising. While I remember Bongo 1.0 seeming unrealistic in how the movement of things was setup, and the frames being hundreds of still frames put together in a sequence to look like simulation, but felt very fake in doing so.

I’ve been dreaming of learning more about Kangaroo to give me realistic abilities to apply ā€˜constraints’ to assemblies or even ā€œsketchesā€. But it would be nice if there were an easier and intuitively simple way for users to apply constraints to 3D workspace entities. More to learn on my end. :coffee:

this is kind of a sad answer for me as a mac User but I am looking forward to the portion.
And total understand your work focus here

Looks fantastic indeed!

It has been a while since I had a project with active animation, if I recall correctly the link to Octane render was working a few years ago, I suppose that is still the case?

Is there an option to export FBX files with baked in animation?

Octane has at least worked with Bongo 2, but that doesn’t mean it will currently work with Bongo 3 WIP. It might work or it might not, unfortunately I don’t have a copy of Octane so I’m not able to test.
We broke the SDK for Bongo 3 in order to add the new features and that made it so that for example V-Ray currently is not compatible. So it depends on if Octane use the SDK or not. Once we get closer to release and freeze the SDK, the renderers can make their required changes, and it will start working again.

Currently Bongo’s animation data isn’t attached to the Rhino FBX export, it’s still on the Wishlist to be added.

thanks for the info, I will wait patiently

Hello Marika,

I use Maverick Render and wanted to know if Bongo will support it ?
Thanks
Phil

I’m not familiar with Maverick Renderer, so I don’t know how it’s integrated with Rhino, but if it is integrated into Rhino as a Renderer and opens with the Render command it should work with Bongo.

Any WIP documentation about how to use physics would be wonderful!

Also, remind me where to download the template files please.

There will be some documentation once we move closer to release, currently the physics part of Bongo 3 is getting a more throw review and the UI will most likely undergo some changes, so there’s no point in making documentation at this point.

What template files are you looking for? The models from the videos shown in this discussion?

Yes. I remember being able to download them from somewhere… maybe they were links attached to a previous release of Bongo 3.

Some of the old WIP releases had animations and their example models attached to them. Unfortunately many of them aren’t working anymore since the product has undergone so many changes since then.
We can post some example models when we release the next WIP.
