I am using the script attached to generate an assembly of 22mm bolt-nut-double washer. sample1.gh (27.6 KB)
When I use 16mm or 20mm bolt size, there are 2 washers generated. However, when I change the size to 22mm, there are 3 washers instead. I am not sure if this relates to the bolt property in the catalog. I am still new in using Grasshopper - Tekla so I am not sure how to proceed. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Oskar! I have also read these support topics earlier, but I can’t seem to find what I am looking for.
Sorry if this may be a dumb question, but how can I modify the number of washers that will be generated based on the bolt size?
Hi Chel,
The issue you are describing occurs with partially threaded bolts, such as ISO 4014, DIN 6914, and similar standards. It is related to the ability to properly tighten the bolt. Oscar shared a very good article that outlines Tekla’s entire algorithm for selecting bolt length and the number of washers.
The user can control only the washer on the bolt head side; on the nut side, the program automatically determines whether one, two, or three washers are required.
An additional parameter that affects the number of washers is “Thread in material,” which controls whether the threaded portion of the bolt is allowed in the shear plane (the zone where elements are connected).
To summarize, the number of washers depends on: the bolt standard, the “Thread in material” parameter, the thickness of the connected elements, and the bolt length.
