Best way to bake and export animated models from Grasshopper?

Hello everyone,

I’m working on a complex Grasshopper model that I would like to animate and render in another software (e.g., KeyShot, or Twinmotion).

I’ve seen a few workflows that involve many steps and additional plugins, but I’m wondering: what is the most efficient or recommended method to bake an animation from Grasshopper as a 3D model sequence?

Ideally, I would like to:

  • Keep the objects as 3D geometry (not just a sequence of jpeg images).

  • Export in a format like FBX or Alembic that can be imported directly into a rendering software.

  • Handle moving objects(s) across frames.

Has anyone found a clean workflow for this? Is Elefront (or other plugins) the best way, or is there a simpler approach?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Rhino 8 has native tools to bake and export geometry.

I used to render things in Keyshot and exported my geometry as blocks which allowed to set up transformations in Keyshot easily. That works fine for a few bolts…

With the advancements in Rhino, I create most of my images in Rhino nowadays.

Thanks for the Reply @martinsiegrist
Not sure what or how can i use natively to export complex mophs from grasshopper as “blocks”..
I mostly have complex point clouds from sonic simulations or meshes morphing of after another shape… so bit clueless how to export this in a simple sequence from rhino+grasshopper

Few examples

That’s pretty cool.

Why don’t you render the animations in Rhino?

Because im not very familiar in video animations in Rhino.. feel more familiar & comfortable in terms of camera settings in Keyshot or Twinmotion. Also especially when Grassshopper involves, im bit scared honestly

You can animate sliders and export single images. I do most of my animations like this.

Yes, i’ve been doing that too, but when it comes to dynamic camera paths, material + environment settings etc, it feels too basic… I want to make a flythrough videos in the scenes with more dynamic shots, rather than static camera..

I only have Keyshot 9 but can’t you do path animation in more recent Keyshot versions?

Yes they have a lot of camera animation options, especially in the new versions.
Even Twinmotion is very capable of product animations in these days too..
So yes, I really need an animated model export from Rhino out :))
