AUTOSAVE is Useless

This morning I have continued with the project and I verify that Autosave works correctly.
Thank you. :innocent:

this is happening to me just recently. does anyone know why my autosave is not save the files. it doesn’t show the description of autosave in rhino and also it doesn’t appear on my autosave folder or trash bin. anyone know how to fix this??

Hi William -
Could you start by running the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here? Also, please post a screenshot of the Rhino Options -> Files page.

I’ve been using Rhino for years thinking AutoSave worked as indicated above
I guess that’s why I’ve often been frustrated - computer crashing and thinking that I’ve only lost 10 minutes of work but then I find there’s no AutoSave file
My preference is always for the simpler rather than more elaborate functionality - in this case an automatic save every X minutes

Hi William, does running the Autosave command explicitly at the command line make a file?

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

I’m normally not too bothered, as I only model as a hobby…

I came across this issue today, and I have lost 1 and half hours of work. Actually, I have NEVER managed to cause Rhino to crash in a way that it causes a crashdump action (where it will warn you that it just crashed). Normally, it just closes, buggers off, and then leaves me to go and clear up and search for an autosave.

I do wish that the Autosave feature worked more naturally. My last RhinoAutosave in the AutoSave folder was 12/06/2023! Impressive considering Rhino has had about 12 hours of working use since then.

I thought I was safe, as I spent half an hour moving a camera around for test renders, but nope!

Perhaps the AutoSave feature is quiet quitting.

Hi David - I am not sure I understand what you are reporting.

I assume I came across the same misunderstanding of the autosave function. I came from 3DS Max, where AutoSave feature is strictly explicit; sometimes annoying, but it never failed to AutoSave every ‘n’ minutes.

I opened a Rhino file 2 hours ago, did 1.5 hours of work, and then Rhino closed/crashed on me (I hadn’t saved myself, as I was deep in how I was modelling). Anyway, I thought that as the rate of AutoSva s ervery 20 minutes, I thought all of my modelling would be saved.

This was not so, and there was never an AutoSave in the entire time I have been modelling while Rhino has been “awake”, in fact, since three days ago according to the last AutoSave file, which is well over 12 working hours in Rhino.

Hi David - please check the Windows trash for old autosaves.

That seems better. However, still fruitless in terms of the expected behaviour.

The last Autosave for the file was 12:32 PM, and I had Rhino open for 4 hours or so after that, where I was modelling, in which time… nothing from AutoSave.

Thanks!

Hi David - Rhino tosses autosave files in the trash when Rhino saves or closes cleanly. So presumably you closed or saved Rhino at 12:32 -ish, after which time Rhino crashed - does that sound right?
-Pascal

So I had Rhino open from probably 10:00 all the way through until 16:00 approximately (maybe a little longer). I then closed it and reopened at 21:00 (approx). I had it open from 21:00 until around 22:30/23:00, when it crashed, with no evidence of any AutoSave since midday.

Hi David - That does seem incorrect if the same file was open the entire time. There should be an autosave in the trash from ~16:00 and the 12:30 one should not, I think be in the autosave folder but in the trash.

I am resurrecting the tread, yet again. Today I lost a file. I usually save iterations of the file, 01, 02, 03… etc… However today I worked on the same file, and well… I am left now with the previous version. Nothing on deleted files, nothing on autosave. NOTHING. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
I think that a solution like the one employed by Keyshot 10 would be highly beneficial to all users. We put many hours into our projects and when the shit hits the fan… well it ain’t pretty.
RhinoVsKeyshot

Keyshot saves your file along with up to the 5 last saves. And is a god sent when you have to retrieve a non-working file. I would love to see this feature implemented in Rhino.
Currently, there might be lots of different features that would be nice to implement. But a robust program that doesn’t crash (especially with large files) should be the priority, if not, a safe way to receive our work like the batches system of Keyshot will be incredibly appreciated.

People are annoyed at the “3dmbak” files existing, any more elaborate data safety features just just be part of your normal backup regimen.

Keyshot batch file backup can be enabled or disabled. Standard mode is disabled, but the users can choose.

Personally, what annoys me is losing hours or days of work. Actually annoyed doesn’t even begin to express it.

I think is not that complicated to give users the option of additional file-keeping. If there is a tab inside of preferences, it will not bother anyone. Do you want extra safety for your projects? enable it. You don’t? then let it be.

Hi David - please start a new thread and describe exactly what bad thing happened- I am not yet clear on just what you saw, and what you expected to see. Was IncrementalSave involved?

-Pascal

Hi Pascal, I can’t recall exactly what happened. I tried to replicate it but was unable so far. My reason to post was to see if a different autosave could be implemented. Non the less if it happens again I will start a new thread.
Thanks for your interest.

I am having the same issue. Currently, the autosave folder is empty but If I type in that command it makes an autosave in the original folder. I have a custom path for the autosaves but it is hit or miss if it uses that path or the original path, and it is completely random when it saves. Rhino crashed and it had been 30 minutes since the last autosave but I have it set to every 5 minutes. I found that autosave in the recycling bin even through rhino crashed.

I am using Rhino 8 and it is crashing constantly so this is a big issue for me. I implemented the idle processor command but I am using commands the whole time I am working so it doesn’t trigger, but the autosave function isn’t triggering either.

When rhino 8 crashes it does not offer to open a recovery file when I open it again. I am currently trouble shooting the crashing, but I have to work to do so I can’t just stop using it while its unstable.

Old thread but just wanted to thank you for mentioning to check the recyle bin! had been working on a file, I hit the save button (not save as) and thought it was saved, did some further work on my file and decided to go back to my previous “saved” file, closed it and realized after opening it again that it was my previous save from like 4 hours ago, had completed some very tedious sub-d work and was about to lose it lol stumbled upon this thread and at that point thinking its gone for good when you mentioned the recycle bin and whala! had an autosave in there from maybe 10mins before I closed it.

I wish the autosave functioned like I have it setup in zbrush, it never overwrites the file and just keep saving new files. of course it starts eating alot of storage space if neglected, but I can manually delete everything I don’t need, but more importantly I don’t have to worry about forgeting to save for long periods of time.
