An Electric Cruising Launch

This electric launch is designed for cruising local waters with a bunch of friends or cruising greater distances with another to spend the night or go for longer cruises. She has long range for her type and is relatively low voltage at 48 volts using an Electric Yacht 15 KW water cooled electric motor that requires 48 VDC.

Nice. It reminds me of a steam launch.

Excellent boat modeling and view

I have dolled her up a bit and it looks like she’ll be built in Maine at a great builder: Lyman Morse Boat Builders…cheers, Rob

Interesting. Would you share more on the drive, range, hull resistance? I find most customers want to go fast, and that really doesn’t fit well with electric drives and associated heavy batteries.

The motor is an Electric Yacht 15KW or 20HP. Her battery pack is 32, 100AH lithium Iron Phosphate batteries in two banks of 16. Her shape is relatively slippery as Holtrop Calculations show a range of 125 miles at 7.5 knots or 836 MPH and her full power speed that yields 100 miles of range is 8.7 knots or 10 MPH. She is quite the displacement type of boat and that’s what gives her the long range. Think of a 40’ sailing yacht which would have the same speed characteristics. Lyman Morse of Thomaston, Me is the builder.

This is a displacement hull and I’ve run Holtrop Calculations to assure speed vs. HP. She will do 8.7 or 10 MPH at full throttle and range at that speed is a bit more than 100 miles. At 80% throttle the range increases to 125+ miles. I have found the Holtrop method to be pretty darn accurate and have great confidence in the hull form.

I have used the Savitsky built into Orca for my planing hull designs, and it seems to be very similar to what the boats performed when built.
I designed an asym planing foil assist catamaran that is being built now, fully electric drive. Will be interesting to see how it performs.

I have a question for you, John. I use both V7 and V5. V5 with Flamingo Nxt excellent “water” for rendering and that’s why I still use V5. I did a re-install successfully for V5 and Flamingo Nxt. However I can’t seem to figure out how to get the text bar that normally appears at the very top of the V5 display, above everything else. It has become my habit to access that horizontal text toolbar often for commands that I have not yet aliased. I am seeking your expertise to help me get that text bar back where it belongs. robbieladd@comcast.net. many thanks in advance, Rob

If I understand your description, I think you’re asking about the pull-down menus.
In Rhino Options > Appearance, make sure “Menu” is checked.
Any luck?

Thank you so much for getting back to me, John. I actually found just what you described a couple of days ago and all is quite well. I have a complex file that is tough to render but by removing some of the passengers from the ferry/launch and one of the bicycles, I have just enough memory to complete some renderings. This boat is part of a submission to the city of Annapolis in an answer to an RFP I received from them for a new electric Ferry/ Launch. We have till the 20th of this month to submit. I have finalized the design as a very stable vessel that carries the 15 passengers maximum, they are looking for as well as up to three wheelchair bound passenger and storage for bicycles and scooters.

It took me awhile to find the right box to check to get “rendered” back in the menu but eventually I did and felt rather like the dummy I am that I did not find it sooner. I must say that you and all of McNeel and Associates respond so well to our needs out here in the field know as Rhino Users!

Again, many thanks and all the best, Rob
