I’m working my way through the tutorials and the one where you’re supposed to be able to copy an object by hitting the ‘alt’ key doesn’t do anything. No plus sign appears next to the selected object. This is the same whether Gumball is active or not.
This can be a little tricky, but the way it works is this: You start dragging (with Gumbal) and while you drag, you briefly tap the alt key. Does that work for you?

That worked, thank you very much.
Pressing and holding the Alt key before starting to drag with a Gumball handle also works (to make a copy).
