Adding bump map messes up Rendered viewport representation

If I apply a texture and then a bump map to an object, the whole thing (especially shaded areas) lightens considerably in Rendered viewport, making it hard to tell what I’m going to get in the render. What am I doing wrong/what’s the workaround for this (if any)?

Noted. We have already made some significant fixes to the way bump mapping in the viewport works in V6.
