WISH: Triplanar mapping in Rendered mode

I didn’t find anything about triplanar mapping in Rhino, I know Bella has one, however, it would be much better if it could be visible in the Rendered mode. I post this wish here because I think it’s something that needs to be allowed on the Rhino side.

I know that I can assign different materials to different faces, but that is not always possible + some control over transition is needed.

Hi @Czaja ,

Can you provide a sample 3dm with a textured material and an image showing what you expect to get with triplanar mapping? I’ll see if there’s a way to get the same result now and also file a request for the developers. Thanks.

Hi Brian,

I don’t think I can send you anything made in Rhino. If we can make a good-looking tri-planar mapped sphere we can do other things too.
An important aspect of good tri-planar materials is the fine control over the transition phase. To achieve good results, simple blending between textures is not enough, height-based blending is needed.

Bella has its own tri-planar texture, but it’s only visible during Rendering but not in the Rendered mode

Some amazing looking results are shown here:

These spheres look beautiful also thanks to the fine displacement but what we talk about is the transition in the middle.

Very convincing results - height map helps make the transition less apparent and does not “mush” textures as it is with simple texture transition
