Wish: SubD Optimize – Automatic Vertex Welding and Topology Cleanup

I’d like to suggest an Optimize command for SubD objects

When editing SubD geometry, especially after operations such as Bridge, Stitch, or Append Faces, coincident vertices or edges may remain disconnected, sometimes producing unexpected surface deformations.

Currently, Stitch can resolve these issues, but it requires manually identifying and selecting the affected vertices or edges.

It would be useful to have a single command that automatically:

  • Welds coincident vertices within a user-defined tolerance.

  • Stitches compatible coincident edges where possible.

  • Removes degenerate or unused geometry, where applicable.

Ideally, the default tolerance could be 0, affecting only exactly coincident vertices, with the option to specify a larger tolerance when needed.

The goal is to clean up SubD topology without manually searching for disconnected vertices or performing multiple operations.

A similar request was discussed here:
[Merge by distance SubD]

This is similar to the Matchmesh edge command for Rhino repair.

There is also Alignvertices command that might help too.

Thanks, Scott!

I’ve tested AlignVertices, but it only adjusts vertex positions without actually welding them.

What I’m looking for is automatic welding of coincident SubD vertices within a specified tolerance, including stitching compatible edges where possible.

I think in Rhino 9 Beta wit will weld. We just updated that function.

Let’s hope so! I’ve tested it in Rhino 9 Beta, but for now it still doesn’t weld the vertices.
Adding a Weld=Yes/No option to AlignVertices would be a nice solution too.
