Wirecut doesn't cut curved surface - please help

Hello,

I’m wondering if anyone could help - please.

I’m trying to cut through this curved cylinder with a curved wire, through the Wirecut command but this is what happens (see images). Does anyone know of an reason why this happens and/or how I can cut through this shape? With a clean cut, so I can fillet edge the edges afterwards. I have been able to cut a line from this curves cylinder before, with a similar curved wire, which worked. So, I’m so confused that this slightly more curved wire won’t cut though properly…can anyone help? Am I using the wrong command? Is there a better command?

Please attach a 3dm file

Hi Menno

Attached. Any help would be really appreciated, I’m totally stuck on this one.

It looks like the red curve is not intersecting the gray object properly.

Thank you. Do you know how I can rectify this? I created the red line, based on the wireframe of the object. So, I’m unsure as to how I can create a line, with a curve to intersect properly. Do you know how to fix this?

I think this is an easier method for this. Single surface > Trim > OffsetSrf (Solid=Yes)

First of all - thank you so much!

But, you’ll have to give me more details please as the curve is different at the bottom with this method. I am so grateful you have another method, which i want to try again with a smaller curve at the bottom. How did you get the red curve to be flat like that?

And, how did you get the object to be thin, instead of thicker? (the one on the left, that has no trim)?

Really appreciate your help.

You can use SetPt for this. Or scale to the center point of the gumball using one of the scale handles.
I did remove a couple of control points, so it could be the curve is slightly different.

For the single surface: Explode, then delete all except the inner surface.

You’re an absolute legend mate. I learned a lot today. And, you really got me out of a tight situation - thank you so much.

Hi Gijs,

Apologies, I have another question. How do I get rid of the step on the side of the object? I’ve tried the trim from different heights and it brings the same result? do you know how to fix this? I ask because I need it to be smooth on the sides, as I’ll want to fillet edge is after the trim.

Or, do you know how i can ‘smooth over’ this step after the trim has been done?

Any help would be appreciated.

maybe ReplaceEdge can help, but I think you need to work on your trimming geometry. If you send the surface and the trimming curve before you make this trim, I can have a look.

Hi,

I tried replace edge but it didn’t give the result I needed, thank you for the suggestion though. I’ve also tried to move the curve/trim line up and down and it always gives a similar result. I’ve tried about 50 times.

I’ve attached the 3dm file with the the surface before I trim it (it’s pretty much the same as before but with the object exploded)

I really appreciate your help, Gijs.

The curves were not lining up with the upper edge, try with this:

Gijs - thank you so much for this. I can see what you did, you altered the top curve to fit the line of the curves on the object. I never even thought to do this. I’ve managed to sort it all now, with your help.

…there may be more questions…as I have a smaller one to do…
