Hi,
V5
saves taking 2 mins and files 300Mb large are doing my head in.
Wish I had V7 operational might be quicker.
Seems mad that we have to have a high poly count to display detail and such gets applied to the rest of the planar surface model making the entire project take 2 mins to save !
My item is mostly flat (though rusty so a bit like sandpaper !) but with some detailed parts. If I decimate the mesh I have found the detail areas are lost to me, might look ok with the image mapped BUT when I come to section them and extract data from the shapes , its been mellowed down.
Just what prog is there that can identify a relatively flat area and reduce the polys for it ?
I am using Agisoft to make the model from photos and have asked, with zero replies, there again many posts on the forum dont get answered. I very much doubt their prog does so, it will decimate but nothing more clever.
Meshlab (free) can do this to some extent; however, it does not provide the best results.
For quality decimation that preserves local detail you should consider a commercial tool such as Geomagic.
I should add that decimation destroys UV coordinates, so your photo textures will not longer work.
If you need the photo texture to be applied after decimation you need application that can generate new UV’s for the decimated geometry.
There are apps that can do this, but its going to make your workflow more complex.
On the free side, you could try Blender, I think it is able the recompute UVs for a texture after decimation.
Hi,
Cdordoni…thanks, I will explore those progs. I wish Agisoft has that as an inbuilt option when first making the meshes.

I installed win 10, then Photoshop and Rhino v5, then v7 and after those I was down by 0.5Gb available ram, I did a print screen of task manager after each reboot after each install and watched the memory decrease when in win7 there was no decrease.
It was also rejecting every usb portable My passport drive plugged in, and also one of two partitions on the spinny internal I put in a caddy ready for copying data to the new ssd’s.
PC pit crew said my spec was good for win7 but I need new MBd, CPU, cooler, Memory, GPU, so I am trying to find time and money to get such, then rebuild the hardware, meanwhile back to win7 !
The decreasing available ram as I install each prog is concerning. reckon I need 64Gb memory to end up with 32Gb I am used to ! I need to do more installs and see if the trend continues and is 10Gb available ram a problem when I had 31Gb ?
