View's names quantity (wish)

Hi!
Is there a way to have more than 4 views in that bar?

IMO it would be great to have this possibility (or maybe it is reserved for something, than sorry for the topic :)) )

Hi Sergey-

Thanks for the suggestion. In what specific workflows do you think would be most useful to have added views? (at the moment, the intended logic is the 4 available views in the viewports area).

I presume you are well aware of the NamedView command and are suggesting something additional in terms of UI.

Hello, Dan!
Thank you for your attention.
Fist of all, I find it rather handy to switch views with this panel because it takes very little time to reach it. (Especially when side panes and floating toolbars are hidden. (I work on Macbook 15")
My work is jewellery modelling. When models are not symmetrical it’s important to quickly switch between left/right, front/back and some created views. Especially, when presenting model to a customer, using 3Dmouse.
Sorry for taking your time with my whim.

Best Regards,
Sergey

hey Dan.

similar topics have come up a few times… for example:

personally, i think it would be a lot quicker and more fluid if the named views were somehow integrated into that bar…

we’d get one-click access to all our custom views which, to me, makes it more friendly for the user as well as more likely to be used as a presentation tool…

as is now, with it in the sidebar, i have to first switch to the palette, do my thing, then change it back to the palette i use while modeling (i generally use three… Layers, Objects, History)… i suppose i could add a fourth but it would be too crammed i think…

another sort-of issue is unless your Views panel is open, you can’t see a list of your views… and as i said before, it’s not entirely practical to have the Views panel active at all times because there are more ‘valuable’ panels to visible in that area of the screen during modeling.

if you use the keyboard instead (namedView command), you’re actually switching between the keyboard and mouse (twice) and can’t use only one of them…
it’s usually at least 4 clicks for me to switch views… the multiple clicking also isn’t too good when you’re trying to compare two views… it’d be better to just one-click when doing that.

and, it seems like the space is available without interfering or even altering the existing UI.

idk, just ideas.

Me as well, I have a lot of blank real-estate on that bar and I don’t even work full screen on my work 27" iMac.

I have noticed on Windows Rhino, they can have the Layouts pages in tabs at the bottom.

We don’t get that with layouts for Mac.

Exactly.

I also wish the “Ribbon bar” tabs could be reorganized and other palettes added to it. Since this is a wish list and I have mentioned this one before.

I do like the Main & Standard toolbars together, I wish I could do that when I have to use WinRhino.

I also wish that all those items could be centred if we wanted. It would help with mouse movement.

We have something better! A completely separate Layouts window that you could set up on a second screen, and pictorial page representation!

Max.

I think we finally have that now … not on my second screen for this screen shot.

Hi Sergey-

Thank you, that makes it more clear. For you, it’s about speed and accessibility.

No need to apologize! I just wanted a bit more clarity  We welcome this kind of feedback.

Best,

I like this idea…but I’m not exactly sure how to do it properly. As it stands now, you can get your named view(s) setup as one of the four options…

But it sort of muddles the use of the control. What I mean is: when you rotate NamedView1, then switch to Front (for example), then click back to NamedView1, it doesn’t Restore NamedView1, it just switches back to the modified view. Maybe we could italicize the title in the control (or something) and a double-click would restore the NamedView (I don’t know…I’m basically making things up right now). Regardless, it sounds like a concrete request would be to have the option of adding more items to this bar (and after that, I’ll bet the need to be re-orderable… MR-2879. Does that sound like a fair assessment? It seems in keeping with @sergey’s original request.

Yeah, me too @rhinorudi. I have to remind myself to switch to a smaller sized window to mimic smaller laptops from time to time, then I have to remind myself to switch to German or Japanese (zenkaku katakana rivals German for string-length these days). My point is: that area gets real crowded real quick (I think we have a bug where Layouts… gets squashed). But this is what Autolayout in Cocoa is for, so I think the problem is solvable…it just may need some creative logic.

Good ones at that. Thanks.

Forgive the minor OT here…

One of the coolest new features in macOS 10.12 Sierra is tabs in applications. We are currently working toward having all related modeling views - model, layout, materials - as tabs in the same window. They could still be floating windows on their own if you like, but you could collapse them into tabs too. Hopefully this will work as we intend…stay tuned.

As far as i can tell, that was one of the very first wishes that was put on the heap - in the previous millennium. Buried way below all the other stuff that came after. I think consensus was that a star should be added when a named view was changed.

Cool, I just upgraded at work this morning, but no time to really explore Sierra.

:worried: again something I like that doesn’t last…

I just realized I could use tabs with open Rhino files. Not the floating palettes , yet.

Open a few Rhino files and then under Windows, select Merge All Windows, mine is greyed out because I only have the one window open.

@dan I just noticed, hahaha, that my top bar that has Grid Snap Gumball History etc. is missing in Sierra? Is this happening to everyone?

Thanks, Randy

i don’t have sierra but what about View -> Show Toolbar ?

Is it Monday already, LOL Yup thanks Jeff. It seems to be off by default. I opened a few new windows, each one I selected View> Show toolbar before opening another file. Each success one opened without the toolbar showing.

I may leave one with Toolbar and quit then restart Rhino to see.

UPDATE — quitting Rhino (WIP anyway) with the toolbar showing doesn’t help. After a rhino restart a new file opens without the toolbar showing.

I was looking in Preferences & Menubar - Window for options, I forgot about View menu.

Thank again, Randy

Right-clicking on the menu bar - to the left or right of the document name - should also bring up a menu where you can switch it back on.

Here at home it starts up like usual. Probably because I am running El Capitan here. It might be a merge window thing at work. I will investigate more tomorrow. Thanks,
«Randy

yeah, that’s no good… i think people would almost always be wanting the restored view in this scenario.

in the spirit of making things up on the fly ; ) … what if they were separated somehow? the things on the left act as they do now (perspective, top, etc)… then a space/separator… then the named views start…?
meh.

yeah, that’s probably best because ultimately, my idea about putting the named views in the bar is already a compromised solution… i think the better way would be only having named views in the bar then what’s currently there is removed and improved…

(i know of a new 3d software which has a little widget thing that’s sweet, easy, and very powerful regarding generic view changes… if anyone is interested in having a look at that)

idk, i’m not saying any of this is a ‘must have feature’… i’m mainly just saying that i very rarely use named views currently but if they were a lot simpler to use (well, faster) , i think i’d use them in much more of my models.
