V8 Cycles unwanted reflections on ground plane

It seems to be a recent thing, but in Cycles renders with an HDR environment, flat color background, shadow only ground plane (basic ‘light box’ product render) we’re seeing reflections in the ground plane. It doesn’t seem to happen in V7.

It’s still there in the 08-06 version.

I’ll need a file or steps that reproduce the issue. So far I see no issues:

It’s happening on a box here…also I’m not sure your sphere sample isn’t in fact showing the issue.

So your sample there actually does show the unwanted reflection, just change the angle to be lower to make it obvious.

I am not a beginner and I am getting tired of being gaslit that my issues don’t exist or are my fault because of my bad workflow that’s worked fine since Brazil was being actively developed!

Yes, I realized that yesterday, but haven’t gotten around to logging a bug for that just yet.

When I don’t directly can reproduce errors I will ask for steps how to do so. That is not gaslighting. You are entitled to your opinion, though.

Logged as: RH-83327 Reflection instead of shadow on shadows-only groundplane

Until fixed I would suggest using a plane with the same color as the background (assuming you use single solid background color) instead of shadows-only ground plane.

Make it large enough to be able to catch the entire shadow. In all likelihood it will be much smaller than the ground plane geometry. And since it won’t have the shadow catcher part in it’ll be faster as well.

RH-83327 is fixed in Rhino 8 Service Release 13 Release Candidate

Jim to be clear, we all know you and your extensive history with Rhino… we have a ton of respect for your feedback. No offense intended at all, we just want to make sure we are understanding the problem so we can get it sorted, sorry if you felt differently.

I missed this myself the first time I tried to reproduce it.

@JimCarruthers are you seeing this resolved in 8.13?

It appears be.

Thanks!
