I started this thread to discuss the newly released beta V6 for Rhino, below are my thoughts: V-Ray 6 for SketchUp and V-Ray 6 for Rhino beta | Chaos
Feature Set:
1- Enscape Compatibility, although this is a welcome feature for escape users, for people who are deeply invested in earlier versions of V-Ray I don’t think this is a Game Feature.
2- Procedural Clouds, Good for Dramatic Skies, I can see this can be used in Timelapse Videos
3- EnMesh Render: Populating mesh surfaces with Object, I’d prefer using Grasshopper with Vray Proxy to achieve a better control.
4- Camera Clipping: A very needed feature with almost unintuitive controls4-
5- V-Ray for Grasshopper: Added Support for Dome, Mesh Lights
With the offered enhancements, I’m willing to test the product and report, but I don’t see myself upgrading my V5 licenses since I don’t see these features enhance my Day-to-Day productivity.
I’ll update this thread as I test it more the upcoming weekend.
Yeah, you are referring to Node-Based Material Editor Right? I was hoping one day to be able to build materials using grasshopper too. This can be helpful in setting dynamic materials that talk to the geometry of your model.
It would be fantastic if V-Ray 6 for Rhino would be available for Rhino for Mac, hopefully the developers at McNeel and ChaosGroup can make it happen. Otherwise, a fully functional version that runs on Windows 11 via Parallels on Apple Silicon computers.
A cross platform v-ray is a good wish. Although it is unlikely since vray runs based on cuda/optix so writing something special for apple silicon will be considered a completely different software. Probably called i-ray (oh that software already exists)
From what I understand V-Ray needs a C++ SDK in order to develop a version for Apple Silicon, but only offers a .NET/Mono one, meaning that Chaos would need to rewrite V-Ray using C# instead of C++. If they have a C++ SDK, I don’t understand why they wouldn’t allow Chaos to use it to create a V-Ray for Rhino for Mac version, it would certainly boost their sales!
