USD Export, Custom Mesh Names

When you export a model to USD, each surface gets a mesh name that is sequential and generic. (mesh1, mesh2, etc.) Is there a means of naming those meshes? Even something as simple as inheriting the layer name would be sufficient. (Layer Name: Rivet, Mesh Name: Rivet1, Rivet2, etc.)

Hi Tim - does naming the mesh objects in Propertes do anything good?

No. I tried selecting the surfaces/extrusions and naming them, but none of that has any effect on the output when exporting to USDZ.

@Alain - do you have an idea about this?

I just tried exporting and can see that layer names are used to group objects together in the USD file. What program are you using to view the USDZ file?

I tested by saving as a USDA file and then looking at the contents in a text editor

Yes, the Rhino layer names are used to group the objects.

I added a YT item to use the “Name” property in the export name if it’s available.

Yes, layer names are used to group the meshes, but each mesh has a generic name. (mesh1, mesh2, etc.) I’m interested in the ability for the meshes to inherit the layer name or apply a custom name.

@Alain, thank you for looking into that and providing a change. Extremely helpful!
