Unroll Surface Splitting Unnecessarily

I have a model that the unrollsrf command will operate well on individual surfaces when it is exploded. But when I try to unroll the whole thing as a polysurface the operation splits the surfaces up into a million pieces.

The model goes from 238 surfaces to 683 surfaces and puts labels every couple inches. I’d really like to have labels on this because it’s kind of a tricky sculpture so unrolling it as a polysurface is my strong preference. Has anyone run into this?

Hello- please post the file or send to tech@mcneel.com with a link back here in your comments.

@20digitdesign - many of the surfaces have curvature discontinuites - that is, they are only tangent continuous internally. These will become polysurfaces on unrolling.

Thanks Pascal. I’m not really sure what that means. When I unroll just one surface the command works great. When I do it as a poly it shatters. Should I just do regular lofts instead of developable lofts and then it might work all as one unit even though the surfaces will be a little more distorted?

Hello- the bit that I looked at also made a polysurface from one unrolling just the surface. Let me poke some more.
@20digitdesign - it may be that the result is misleading because grouped, for the single surface case. Here I get polysurfaces, unrolled.

So when you just do one surface they don’t shatter because its grouped.

Does this function work differently in rhino 7? I’ve been making sculptures like this for years and this is a new problem for me.

Nevermind. I forgot I use paneling tools. Crisis averted.
