"UI Cleanup"

Mousewheel scrolling in panels is not good.
This was mentioned earlier a few times.

Some panels, e.g. Point deviation work ok.
Others, e.g. Properties, do not work at all, also with the scrollbars it is not easy to scroll as wanted.

I know this is not so very important, but on the other hand, it is.
The user experience is not so super with this now.
And that is important.

Thanks for the report… I’ve made sure this is filed as https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-39298

Regarding the general quality of scrolling with a mouse wheel, I tested two different mice with wheels here and the action was quite different. One, a gamer mouse was great and the other a travel Arc mouse wasn’t as smooth. That one has a physical click though as the wheel moves which I think is effecting the feel.

Did you try with more than one mouse?

Yes, mice are very different.
I use MS and Logitech, the most loved is a very old Logitech (and I have 3 of them in spare).
Regarding the scrolling in panels, all mice behave the same.

Sure!

There is another interesting effect:
When we scroll by touching the screen, all the panels scroll good.
But who wants to use Rhino by touch.

The scrolling in panels definitely needs some love.
It’s not only me who sees this, I get this complaints in trainings sometimes, too.

I’ve filed something for the developers but they tend to want more specifics… “love” being as subjective as it is. Can you provide a screen recording showing the scrolling issues you’re running into? I’ll add any of that info to https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-39338 thanks.

Do you find some panels scroll better than others?

Hi Brian,

as an example, try the Properties panel.
What you see in the video is wheel action only.
17x spinning the wheel to move from top to bottom, 17x back.
This web page scrolls with 3x.

Yes, I reopened that one due to finding the same issue…

What I’ve learned from the developers on the more general bug report https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-39338 is that different panels use different scrolling mechanisms. Please let me know what panel if any you like the scrolling in to help direct them. Personally I think the Rendering panel and the Library panel are best.

Layers and Point deviation scroll ok as well.

Thanks Charles, I added that info to the report. Can you site any other specific issues in specific panels like the Properties panel not scrolling and then when it was sluggish to scroll?

You mentioned initially that it is not easy to “scroll as wanted” with the scroll bars too but it’s not clear what that may mean. Again, I found the scrolling action to change depending on the mouse used but you mentioned that all your mice scroll the same. It’s difficult to pin down so far but if you have more specific details, please let me know and I’ll make sure they are logged.

Brian, look here:

@Charles thanks - this issue has already been reported and logged as RH-38515. If you see other issues in other panels, please report them separately.

I know it’s hard to imagine, but different panels are written differently (even in different programming languages using different UI frameworks), and so the same bug may exist in multiple places. We try to make them all look the same, so that you don’t notice that they’re written differently.

It’s easiest for us to fix very specific bugs, so the more specific you can be, the better.

@brian

Also you (or someone else) could open all 24 panels and see how they work.
I think it is better than let me report 24 issues.
Just an idea…

I CAN imagine.

Hmm, you try.
And I shall report basic issues for every single panel?
Can’t you check this in development?

Brian, I described the scrolling issues several times now.
Shall I do the same for every single panel?
Sounds cumbersome and not very efficient :sob:
