Hello, I do not see thumbnails of Rhino files anymore: not in Finder, not when I open Rhino (right column), and when I open files via Rhino (browsing via that window). I’m on Rhino 8 in Mac. Been happening for a while. All software up to date. Is this a common issue? Either way, is there a fix? Thank you. Pasted SystemInfo follows.

Hi Dale, They did not in the Finder. I am not sure if they did with Mac Rhino 7 either. I do recall being able to see the thumbnails when I would open Rhino and see recent files on the right. I don’t recall this part working since using Rhino 8.
Hi @scroggin,
Sorry for the issues you are having with your file previews.
They are tough and this is what I found out today from our developers.
This is what we know:
This seems to be related to the Sequoia 15.0.1 update.
The thumbnail preview is not the responsibility of anything provided by the Rhino for Mac.
Mac OS’s Quicklook generates these.
Some of our developers here have also seen the indexing get out of sync. The thumbnails go away for awhile…a restart of the Mac helps and sometimes just waiting a while has worked for those here that have seen it.
Others in the Mac world have also seen this too: See these suggestions from the Mac support forum.
If you have an active Apple support contract, you many want to contact them or make an appointment at the Apple store to talk to a Genius.
Erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the Mac Sequoia OS has been reported to fix this issue.
A Rhino customer has confirmed that they solved the issue with Apple Support.
Apple support advised that the best option was to to totally erase the hard drive and set up like a new computer.
Then the customer restored all data and apps ,one at a time, from a backup.
It was a long process and the Previews were restored.
He now can see them as before and the system is very fast with only fraction of used hard drive space.
apple is getting really good at making things worse recently (or for quite a while to be honest) just look at their calculater which they finally managed to bring to ipad after almost one and a half decades. they seemed to have changed code while doing so and now one of the most basic functions to repeat the last operation with = is gone. and nobody at apple seems to miss it. talking about geniuses at apple… well not anymore obviously.
Thank you Mary Ann. Glad to hear there is a potential fix, but reinstalling everything would be as described, a long process. I may attempt and will post any progress if I ever find the time. I do have Rhino installed via Parallels too and use that when seeing thumbnails is crucial. Thumbnails work in my Windows version thankfully. I have to use that anyway for vray. Overall just happy that Rhino for Mac has improved so much over the years.
Mary Ann This is Udo Kolter. I Reported This back in October 2024. I have not see a reply from a developer of Rhino V8 Mac . Can you check what’s going on with this problem. I also talked to Apple about this and got no ware. I find it very annoying .
Is Quicklook rendering the contents of the Rhino file to generate the file thumbnail, or is Rhino capturing a screenshot of the file’s last saved state for the thumbnail?
If the latter, how is the graphic being embedded, and are you saying MacOS is stripping the thumbnail out? As it stands, Thumbnails are working for everything else in Sequoia 15.1.1, but not for R8 files.
I’m late to the party here but am still having the missing preview thumbnail for Rhino files - doesn’t seem to be fixed for me but maybe I’m missing something? Did the following:
• Apple M1 Pro with Ventura 13.6.7
• used AppCleaner to remove prior install of Rhino 7 (on an institutional license) and Rhino
8 (on my current individual eductaional license)
• Re-installed Rhino 8 updated to [Rhino 8 Service Release 17 Release Candidate as
noted in Brian Gillespie’ message
• Multiple system restarts, opening 3dm files and resaving, reopening… nada
Thoughts anyone?
Thanks,
Brian
I HAVE recently encouraged McNeel to allow an option to create square icon previews, in order to make best use of the Finder thumbnails. There is a macro than will do this after a fashion ~
-NewFloatingViewport P C EnterEnd -ViewportProperties S 580 580 EnterEnd ZEA
… but I’m hoping that such a goal will be integrated into an “app-level setting”.
if so, try saving an edited .3dm to a location that’s not syncing (your Downloads folder for example)
if the preview icon is now working, there’s a setting in System Prefs you need to change in order to get preview icons for .3dm files saved to a syncing folder:
System Prefs→ your Apple ID name→ iCloud → Drive → turn off the setting “Optimize Mac Storage”
(this means everything is going to be on both computers instead of it downloading on a use by use basis.. I personally prefer it this way but make sure you weigh the local storage requirements vs preview icons importance before changing this setting)
basically, the reason this setting makes a difference, if you’re Optimizing Mac Storage then the file is treated more as a placeholder with less storage being used so a full icon isn’t generated or shown.. you have to make the synced files download on an as needed basis (click the little arrow on the file or try to open the file then it will fully download from iCloud.. (and it will likely sync a bit faster with the generic icon as well)
