Suggestion/wish - images as external references

I often use Rhino for topographic purposes, and load raster images.
Rhino embeds the images in the save file, and with big images the result is a very huge file, slow to to save and difficult to work with.
What I would like is the possibility to have the images externally linked, and not embedded in the file.
As an extra the jp2 (jpeg 2000) format support.
As another extra the ability to read the coordinates in the image file and place/scale the raster.

While jp2 and automatic coordinates placing could be a nice plus, the possibility to have the images as external references would be a great enhancement in my case.

Well, it was possible in V5… Looks like the option has been removed in V6, along with a few others…

Hi Mitch - yeah… That option has been removed… I’ll look into it. The other missing options are incorporated in the Picture material though. But we can’t embed the images and not give you some way to remove them selectively…

Yeah, found that afterwards, thanks! --Mitch

It looks like it’s possible again to save the 3dm without embedding the textures in the latest internal botd. I just ran a test using Save As and checking or unchecking this option…

What are the other features you mentioned that have been removed?

@andy FYI

The original PictureFrame gave you a command line switch to embed or not at the time of creation…

I’m sorry but I’m probably missing some obvious points.

With Rhino 5:
If I import a dwg with linked images by default bitmaps are embedded.
Same if i use pictureframe and embed bitmap.

At this point as far as I know there is no way to unembed the images, also with save texture unchecked.
If I check save textures the file size doubles.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Massimo
