Suggestion: Boxedit for SUBD edges

Maybe for faces as well but I’m more interested in edges right now. In this example I’d like to use Boxedit to create edges of equal length but boxedit only recognises the whole subd instead of its topology.

Ideally I could set a length along the normal in Boxedit and have each of these edges the same length. Is this possible to implement? (This would obviously require the normal of an edge to be properly recognised which the Gumball still very often struggles with).

Eh. You cant even do this with regular curves. Why not? It’s a straight line, it has length in one direction - why can’t Boxedit scale a curve along its length?

Am I missing something here? There’s no way in Rhino to set a curve length?

Doing this in blender. You cant directly set an edge length but you can visually adjust with live dimensions to get it very close. I’m really hoping for some maturity to SUBD tools in rhino 9.

No need to do boxedit, just use the gumball set to Align to Object

Then subobject select an edge and do the same visual approach as in Blender.

Except that Rhino is very inconsistent with getting edge normals. I’ve raised this in another thread as well as it’s a constant issue modelling in subd especially with faces.

Right, already logged and on the pile to fix.

The other nice thing with blender is you can see that dimension just by selecting the edge or face. In Rhino you actually need to scale it to see it.

I didn’t know about that heads up display when using the Gumball so that does help, thanks.

Thanks @ftzuk for the suggestion. Filed as https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-86662
