.STEP files are empty after last Rhino8 update

Hi guys,

I have a strange problem when importing a .STEP file coming from TopSolid into Rhino 8. When I open or import it, there is absolutely nothing on screen.

Here is what I already tried and checked:

  • Selection: I did CTRL + A and Rhino says “0 objects added to selection”. I checked layers and hidden objects, nothing is hidden.

  • File check: I opened the .step file with Notepad to see if it was empty, but the DATA; section have thousands of lines of codes (CARTESIAN_POINT, ADVANCED_BREP_SHAPE_REPRESENTATION, etc.). So the geometry is really inside the file.

  • Zoom & Units: I tried Zoom Extents / Zoom All in case the model was super far from origin or too small, but still nothing. I also tried to change unit tolerance.

  • Block manager: I checked if objects were imported as blocks, but block manager is empty too.

It seems Rhino just ignore or fail to read the geometry data when opening the file.

Does someone know why Rhino 8 fail to read TopSolid STEP files, or if I need to change some specific export settings in TopSolid?

It just happened after the last update of the software 8 SR 35

Thanks a lot for your help!

That is weird.

What happens if you re import the Step file into TopSolid?
Does TopSolid give any report of amount of objects exported?

Did you get a message that the Step file reader did not load?

Can you send us the file?

Please check Tools pulldown > Options > Plugins to see if STE file Export and Import is checked in?

Buon lavoro.

That could be possible. I have not seen that often.

I can run some tests on that STEP file. If it is larger you can use this to send it to us: https://www.rhino3d.com/upload
