Status Bar -- Wider Cell for Current/ Object's Layer

Is there a way for that cell to have a custom (bigger) width?

Hello - no… and I hear you, I wish that as well sometimes. There is a tooltip that shows the full ‘address’ but I agree it would be nice to make that (and all) pane flexible in width.
