Shared materials not updating

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create two or more layers with a shared material.
  2. Edit the material by clicking on the material icon next to one of the layers.
  3. Change the color of the material.
  4. Material icons on other layer(s) don’t update.

I’ve also seen material changes not show up in rendered viewports for objects on other layers that share the material, but I don’t have steps to replicate that.
