Shading different on front & back faces issue

I’ve been noticing that surfaces are shading differently depending on the direction of the normals (in modes that should shade same on both sides.) Bug or me-problem? R7.

shading changes based on surface direction 001.3dm (96.5 KB)
EvalShade.ini (13.9 KB)

got do your display modes shaded for instance and under the shading settings switch backface settings to use front face

you have to change that for every display mode if you want others to behave the same.

It’s already set that way, unfortunately. I am familiar with that setting (I have specific display modes that show backfaces differently that I use often, so it’s not that.)

oh sorry. i did not understand that well. ok i am not sure i can install the ini since i am on a mac, i rather not mess with it anyway. does the same problem appear with a regular display mode?

you could ExportPreferences to save all, then ResetPreferences and import bit by bit…

It’s a long-standing known issue

Hi @phcreates,

As it says in the tracker: turning on advanced GPU lighting will mitigate this.

Hi Brian,

I’m afraid the fix does not extend to Block Instances:

Rhino 8.18.25070.14001, 2025-03-11. ‘Use Advanced GPU Lighting’ continues to mitigate this.

Shaded view still showing inconsistent colours.3dm (4.1 MB)
