Rotation of view in perspective, not the part itself

I am having trouble controlling rotating my view. where do I find this to change or reset? I have found clicking on the object that helps a little.

Before we send you off to change settings, please describe this “trouble” specifically.
What is happening and what do you think it should do instead?

With the object(s) selected, try Zoom>Selected

with the object selected i can rotate the view better, the center of rotation is where I click.
if I don’t click the object the the rotation seems like the object is huge and hard to rotate the view to see the other side of the object.
