I don’t get a join warning message. just “Unable to join curves”

When there is a space between the two lines, this message appears

What your video shows is the expected behavior.
What your video doesn’t show is whether or not you ended the join command by hitting Enter or spacebar.
Pressing the Yes button doesn’t cause the lines to join. The lines won’t join if you hit escape or start another command without first ending the join command.
