WIP! This is a Passion Project, where i wanted to blur the line between realistic, and cartoony. I Modeled 95% of what ya see, and used some small bits from Mcmaster Carr. I rendered in Unreal Engine. The House is for a later reveal and will be making a lil cinematic down the road. I feel like only fans of the show will really appreciate the attention to detail.
Very cool! I never noticed the lights were hand held torches duck taped on!
haha, Thanks! yeah, there are a bunch of lil wild things like that. His steering wheel is made of cork. LOL
I love it!
Amazing… love it!!
This is pretty great and didnt realize was a thing!
Thanks alot Scott, big fan of your work! I used to make Physical props for film in Louisiana. Miss it so much!
Thanks Kyle, appreciate all of your tutorials!!
Why did you stop? Lack of work (sadly common these days) or just change of career?
A little of all the above, I moved to Mississippi, which does not have a big film presence. I was a junior prop maker mainly doing assembly and 3d print work/finishing, with minimal rhino exp. Now i design Metal Fab Furniture for my current company, with mainly state contracts. Like, Benches, Trash Receptacles, and Grills. I would love to get back into prop work, maybe as a free lancer, but im currently focusing on unreal engine. Love the idea behind product viz or even previz.
Well I would say that you are in a more stable environment doing what you are doing currently. The film business is a bit of a dumpster fire these days. A lot of work has gone over seas and a lot of people are still out of work. Its unclear when things will get back up and running but it will never be what it was sadly.
I agree, and i hate that. Its such a weird beautiful thing. I do miss it though! I loved getting BTS on projects 2 yrs out, and being able to point stuff out to my kid that i worked on. I was rabbit holing game dev but it seems to be headed towards the same trajectory. The whole entertainment industry is in this really weird place right now. Maybe I should just learn how to design robotic systems in preparation for “physical AI”. LOL
How long were you working in props?
Just for two years. Last show i worked on was in 2020, “65” the adam driver dino movie.
No kidding! The production designer is a friend of mine. He was my art director on Rebel Moon overseeing the build of the dropship. We also worked together on Batman V Superman, small world. I saw 65, i enjoyed it . Certainly better than Rebel Moon. I thought they did a great job considering the budget. And the props looked great.
Sorry to hear things dried up after only two years. Hopefully it picks up again. Its good that you have been working in Rhino. That opens up possibilities down the road should things turn around. But after 36 years i can safely say the business has changed and not for the better.
LOL, that is a small world. Im sure there are a few other small ovelaps somewhere. I liked most of the art direction on Rebel Moons props and vehicles! 65 turned out better than i expected, and some of the props we did were hero props, so thats always fun!
Yeah, I havent been using Rhino hear long, they were an autocad company and it took forever to convince them to switch on over! Im def not gonna abandon the idea of props, once my son is 18, ill be more open to moving for work. IDK about Cali just because of COL and well, CALI… Georgia seems like the best alternative. I need to spend more time “learning” Rhino, honestly ive been doing enough to get by for the job but i see some of these other projects and realize im way behind the curve! Alot of my free time has been soaked up by Unreal E. Have you dabbled? I see youve used twinmotion which is basically UE lite. I could see someone with your use case really shining with it.
I wouldnt relocate for this business. Better off traveling per show. California is my home , always has been. Its expensive by comparison to other states but dont believe everything you read about it. Most of it is political propaganda . No idea what COL is. As for the industry we have seen a steep drop here so i wouldnt move here for work. Atlanta would be a logical choice but even they have seen a huge drop and they are cutting back on tax incentives.
I havent used unreal, no use for it. I render images for concepts and a lot of times the rhino viewport is good enough. I dabbled in twinmotion. It was interesting but again didnt serve my purposes. Since i have to deliver photo real images for production i prefer raytrace renders.
Definitely keep at it with rhino. If you have questions send me a message.
