Rhino8 fails to open

I’ve started seeing a consistent problem with Rhino 8 on Windows.

When the user launches Rhino, the program opens, displays the splash screen and starts to display the main window, then completely disappears.

Re-installing Rhino, restarting or updating graphics drivers had no effect.

Even Rhino in safe mode displayed errors about the plugins (there are no third party plugins).

The only fix has been to repair the 2015-2022 x64 runtime.

Rhino will continue working for several days and then randomly start exhibiting the same problem.

I’ve seen this issue on personal and institutional computers, often with the latest C++ runtime installed, but not always.

Has anyone else seen this issue and determined the cause?

yes- we have seen this before- you need to repair both the x64 and the x86 runtimes.

see this thread.

I will try following your instructions exactly and see how it goes. I’ve not been repairing the x86 version.

Have you had the problem reoccur on the same computer?

I have not seen it recur, but repairing one and not the other may be important.

we always repair both, so I am guessing in lieu of actual testing.

It may be worth grabbing the latest windows update as one of the recent past updates is what broke this. Ideally the latest update will fix it.

I’ll follow your advice and come back later to report.

Replying to myself in case anyone happens upon this post.

I discovered the source of the issue was a print driver from Ricoh overwriting one of the VC++ runtime files. I found a newer version of the driver from the vendor and the problem hasn’t returned. I have 20 computers with this printer and none of them are seeing the issue after the driver was updated.

Also, note that in addition to Rhino, Adobe Premiere would fail to open while this problem was present.
