Rhino v6 saving files takes extremely long (more than 1 hour)

Dear Experts,

My Rhino saves files extremely slow. I created a test file with a simple box geometry arrayed 1000x100 times to make the file weight around 1GB. Then I tried to save it, and it took more than 1 hour.
That was just a test because I experienced a similar issue with other files too. I thought it might be due to some badObjects in the file but it seems that the issue is somewhere else.

I have just uninstalled and reinstalled the graphic card drivers with clear settings.

I also checked the speed of saving the file during the process in the Windows Task Manager and it showed it to be less than 1MB/s (mostly around 300kB/s)
I save to a local SSD M.2 drive. In benchmark it shows around 3,2GB/2,0GB read/write efficiency. Thus I assume the hard drive is not the issue.

I’ll appreciate any help and any suggestions for ie. changing settings of motherboard or graphic card, or Rhino itself.

Hello - please run the AutoSave command and note how long that takes.

Thank you Pascal for quick response. The AutoSave option takes around 1min. Both destination folders are on the same drive. This unfortunately doesn’t help much. I often need a fully saved file during a day.

Does that tell you anything speciffic about the issue?

Hello - yes it does - most likely, at any rate, the lost time is spent compressing the file. I believe we have a way to work around this but I am not sure it is in V6, maybe only V7, I am checking on that.

@sebastian.d - this is in V6 and V7 - please try:

Options > Advanced, and in the filter/search box type in ‘compression’ to filter the list. You should see

Set that to False - does that help?

Hi @pascal,
Your suggestion seems to have solved the slow saves in V7 beta for me. I’m digging deeper to see if save times go up with that setting unchecked they did go up slightly but only by seconds so it’s looking better.

I have a script that measures save time and pastes the results to notes:

Here I shut compression off
Command Start Time 11/3/2020 at 6:51:27 PM
Command End Time 11/3/2020 at 6:51:34 PM
Total Time for save command = 6.640625 seconds

Here I turned compression back on notice how much longer it takes to save
Command Start Time 11/3/2020 at 6:52:22 PM
Command End Time 11/3/2020 at 7:00:24 PM
Total Time for save command = 482.3828 seconds

Here I shut compression off again and notice Rhino saves quickly again.
Command Start Time 11/3/2020 at 7:23:49 PM
Command End Time 11/3/2020 at 7:23:56 PM
Total Time for save command = 6.945313 seconds

Thanks for your suggestion.

Thank you Pascal.
It actually solved the problem. It took ages for me to browse through similar topics but with no clear answer. I believe your suggestion should be copied to all other discussions relating to slow save.
The file gets approx. 50% bigger but with no harm to the smoothes of operating the 3d geometry. Let’s hope it stays that way.

All best
