Rhino Settings for best Performance

Hi Guys,

I know this has been discussed a lot - and I have poured through the forums already - but I wanted some more advice on my specific setup as I have a feeling my Rhino 6 is running slower than it should be considering the power of my system.

PC specs:

ASUS® P9X79 PRO: INTEL® SOCKET LG2011
Overclocked Intel® Six Core i7-3930K (3.2GHz @ max 4.6GHz)
32GB KINGSTON HYPERX GENESIS QUAD-DDR3 1600MHz X.M.P(8 x 4GB KIT)
QUADRO 6000 GDDR5 SAMSUNG (6.144GB)
QUADRO 6000 GDDR5 HYNIX (5.344GB)
2 X 24" ASUS MONITOR

My questions are (consider that I have done the obvious checks):

  1. Can I enable multiple GPU’s in Rhino? I can not SLI them for some reason - I think its because the RAM quantities vary sligthly. I think there was a post in 2015 that says SLI doesnt help much anyway.
  2. How do I choose a prefered GPU for Rhino as one has 6.1GB and the other 5.3?
  3. Can I improve grasshopper settings for faster performance? certain plugins that others seem to use like ‘exoskeleton’ just crash immediately.
  4. If you can see a problem with my spec, what would you recommend changing?

Thanks in advance,

Felix

  1. SLI only works on games.
  2. That’s an Nvidia settings thing.
  3. Not really
  4. I have the same CPU with 4 1080ti’s, it’s getting a little long in the tooth, but still works perfectly functionally for any project, what are the specific issues you are seeing?

Hi Jim,

My main issues are wtih raytrace and grasshopper; Maxwell fire is also very slow… Would RAM updating help? I would assume the motherboard and processor are still quite high spec even if they are 5 years old?

The Quadro 6000 is a Fermi-based card with only 448 compute cores. Your CPU is probably as fast if not faster than a Quadry 6000. Something from Pascal-architecture and more than 1200 compute cores would be much better.

Well I would assume it’s still pretty decent, I haven’t dug into benchmarks to see. One problem now that I think of it is how much performance has been lost in fixes for those multiple memory security flaws.

Thanks. I will try to update that and the RAM

Thanks for your help Jim
