Rhino fails on startup on macbook

I run a digital fabrication course at my university, and we have a rhino cloud account. All of my students have had no problem accessing and using rhino on their machines, but one has suddenly started (after it working fine for a month) having a full crash at startup. It will open the window to select a file or a template, and no matter what he chooses, it crashes right there. He has uninstalled, tried to get an earlier version etc. he is using a pretty outdated MacBook, but has had no problem until this past week, the first week of November 2021. Any thoughts?

Is it an older Macbook near the end of the compatibility requirements for Rhino 7, and then he did that update that came up recently?

He said he had not, but he did try to reinstall since, at I assume that’s the one he’s got now. I thought maybe if he could install an earlier version it would do the trick but I don’t think that works.

Is it an ancient Nvidia GPU Mac?
Apple seems to have completely abandoned them.
The Intel 4000 GPUs are almost as poorly supported.

If you’re running V7, consider a new Silicon M1 Mac.

Hi -

You didn’t mention which version of macOS he is running. We have seen, and are tracking (RH-66183), an issue where the latest security update of Catalina 10.15.7 on a system with an Intel HD 4000 GPU causes Rhino to crash.
If that is the case here, we have an internal version that seems to prevent the crash. We cripple some display features, and, as such, this is only a temporary measure.
Let us know if the user installed the latest security of Catalina, has a HD 4000, and is interested in running a crippled version until we figure this out.

Here are the specs:
MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2012

2.5 ghz dual intel core i5

16gb 1600 MHz ddr3

Intel hd graphics 4000 1536 MB

I did not ask if they had updated but this is a good question.

I am having the same problem. Rhino V7 crashes when opening a file or creating a file.
For me was working before updating to Catalina 10.15.7

My specs are:
MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2012

2.9 ghz dual intel core i7

16gb 1600 MHz ddr3

Intel hd graphics 4000 1536 MB

i am interested on the crippled version until it is figure out

Hi everyone! (@user729, @user1332)

There is a new security update available for macOS Catalina: macOS Catalina 10.15.7 (19H1615) . Note that 19H1615 is more recent than the previous 19H1519.

We’ve tested this internally and it seems to have fixed the crashing issue.

Please update and let me know if it fixes your Rhino crashing issues.

Regards,
-David

Hi David,

Thanks for your message. I have updated, currently running macOS Catalina 10.15.7 (19H1615) and Rhino 7 (7.13.21348.13002, 2021-12-14) is opening successfully.

I have had a couple of crashes, but in general is working fine.

Thanks again,
Juan
