Rhino crashing

i have rhino 7 on a pc, nvidia card, p3200, mobile work station 7730. it has always worked fine until just recently, i get a rhino crash where rhino will lock up and i have to do a forced shut down. i also get a blue screen crash if rhino is open and i’m not using it, the computer will do a restart. i installed the latest nvidia driver and all the other drivers are up to date. i’m wondering if anyone might know what’s going on ? i’m also wondering if i uninstall and reinstall rhino, if that might fix this ?

Please run SystemInfo and post the results. Are you running any plugins?

Hi -

Does that mean that the entire PC locks up?
Is there a specific workflow or file that leads to this?

The blue screen crash somewhat points in the direction of a hardware issue. Does the PC get very hot? Have you checked the vents?
-wim

hi thanks for the help,

no the pc doesn’t lock up, rhino locks up, i do a forced shut down and that’s it. i’m working on a smaller file, no big deal.

the blue screen happens when rhino is open and setting idle, even a blank rhino file setting idle and nothing is getting hot, fans are working fine.

What do you actually mean by “lock up?” Is it just busy or has it actually crashed?

That sounds very bad, like indeed a hardware or Windows issue. I don’t know if Rhino has EVER caused me a Blue Screen of Death.

when rhino locks up, it will stop and get a ghost haze to it, can’t click on anything except to shut it down.

right, but to be clear… Blue screen crash is a very serious hardware/ and or software meltdown.

a Greyed out rhino is a simpler software task crash.

so, if you are having a Blue screen… you need to look at your windows install, your video card (make sure it has not come loose) Your fans, vents, and open the machine to see if it’s packed up with dust and overheating despite the fans working fine.

On the other hand, the greyed out rhino, does it happen with all files, or just one? If just one, can you reproduce it? If all is there a specific task that is failing (like tonurbs, or meshing, or switching from wireframe to shaded, or raytracing etc…

the more finite detail you can provide will help us have a chance at helping.

also if you get any "sad rhino windows that ask for a crash report, please send them they are critical for us to see what is happening.

ok, thanks for the help,

i’m going to try to refine this information better, i think i should talk to dell about the blue screen crash too.

when the rhino file locked up it wasn’t any one thing, not at all, it would just decide it’s time to lock up.

the windows install should be good i just did a reinstall in january 2022.

lots of stuff can cause BSOD- things like a bad ram stick, a video card that is not seated completely, Dirty heat sinks or clogged air screens, etc…

has anyone fixed a rhino crash problem with uninstalling / reinstalling rhino ?

Not really, but it doesn’t take many minutes to try. Sometimes a bunch of commands fail to get installed right and doing a “Repair” fixes it.

are you sending in crash reports (assuming you get the option to do so)
if not, please do, we look at all of them and it helps a lot to be able to look at the specific issues that can cause a crash.

Also if you run the systeminfo command in rhino and post the results it can go a long way towards diagnosing what is happening.
