Rhino crashing while opening a bigger file

Hi Mcneel Team.

Especially since the last Rhino update I have been having big problems with Rhino for Mac. But even before that, my Rhino was very unstable.

What are the problems?

  1. Rhino crashes when I open larger files (70MB-300MB)
  2. Rhino uses 100%+ of the CPU according to the activity monitor (I’ll attache the latest spindump file.)
  3. I also often had the known problem that Rhino crashes as soon as I open the material container
  4. containers and window settings disappear regularly: When changing to a saved window arrangement, sometimes all containers are hidden. This is very annoying

My main problem, however, is that I cannot open the file

What have I already done?

  • Reinstalled Rhino completely
  • Render settings → CPU instead of GPU rendering
  • Importing files into a clean new file → crashes (its not only one file; I tested more files)
  • in a new file the above mentioned problems also occur (3. & 4.)

My setup:

  • Macbook M3 Max, 36GB, 2TB SDD, OS Sequoia 15.3.1 (24D70)
  • Rhino version 8 (8.16.25042.13002)
(By the way: do you recommend another Mac setup so that Rhino Mac runs fast & stable with bigger files?)

Spindump.txt (5.0 MB)

Thanks for any support!!!

Hi Benjamin,

If possible please zip and upload on of the big files having issues here along with a link to this thread in the comments.

Can you run SystemInfo and post the results as well? Thanks!

Hi Japhy,

I’ve uploaded a file a few moments ago.
Here’s also my system report

Please run the SystemInfo command in Rhino. This will give us environment as well as any 3rd party plugin info.

Opened up quickly here on my M1 15.3.1

A couple block table errors when running the Audit command, which wouldn’t cause your issues.

I think we’ll need to wait till the office opens tomorrow to get more details on the spindump.

have you ran the Reset command (to Factory Settings)?

Hi Benjamin -
As for this one:

As you say, that’s a known problem and is on the list as RH-86119 (Crash When Picking Materials Panel on Mac)

To work around this crash for the time being, see:

-wim

Hi Wim,

thanks. I’ve already try this but it doesn’t work for me.
I this cases I also sent the crash reports with my mail adress.

Hey Japhy,

here is the rhino system-info.
Hope, it helps.

I reinstalled Rhino completely two days ago but nothing changed (also reseted all Mcneel entries in the application support library)

With the file I sent you - can you reproduce the crash?

thank you guys for your support!
