Rhino BETA Feature: Clipping Drawings Section Through Curves

In the Rhino WIP, curves are supported when creating clipping drawings. If the curves are in the background, then those curves will be projected to the clipping drawings.

What are Clipping Drawings?

Clipping drawings are dynamic 2D drawings extracted from clipping sections and are projected on either the clipping section plane or placed parallel to World XY-Plane.

Why include curves?

For models that include curves as background objects, or the clipping-plane cut through them, it is expected that these curves show in the background of the drawings, but also output intersection points as part of the section.

How to include curves in the clipping drawings:

  1. Run the ClippingDrawings command.
  2. To also capture curves that lie behind the section, set Add Background = Yes in the dialog.
  3. Follow the prompts to create the drawing.
  • If the clipping plane intersects curves, a Points layer is added with all intersection points (this is part of the section output, it doesn’t require Add Background).
  • If there are background curves, they are included in the visible and hidden layers (this requires Add Background = Yes).

Try It:

  1. Download the Rhino BETA.

  2. Download and open:
    Try It - Curves in Section Drawing.3dm (17.4 MB)

  3. Select the clipping plane Plan View.

  4. In the Properties panel, enable the Perspective view to be clipped:

  5. Zoom out to see the object to be included in the clipping drawing.

  6. With clipping plane Plan View selected, go to the Drafting menu, select Section and Create Drawings.

  7. In the Clipping Drawings dialog, set Properties to “From input objects” and check or enable Add Background. Pick OK.

  8. At the Placement point: prompt, pick on the location point in magenta above the “Site Plan” text as shown in the image below.

The 2D clipping drawing has now been created from the 3D building and 2D parking layout curves.

  1. From the Layouts panel, make the Site Plan layout current. If the placement points were used, the Site Plan will be visible in the detail and look like this:
  2. In the Layers panel, make the ANNOTATIONS::Dimensions layer current.
  3. Using the Dim command, create a few linear dimension on the parking plan to communicate the overall size of the parking area.
  4. Next, double click on the clipping drawing in the Perspective viewport.
  5. Editing the Clipping Drawing by double-clicking on it. The Clipping Drawing dialog will appear. Change the Properties to Source layer".

    With these settings, you will assign the section drawing curves to the same layers that they are originally created on. This will give you layer visibility per detail.
  6. Make the Building Plan layout active.
    Make the detail active and on the 2D PLAN::Parking layer, turn off Detail visibility.

    Double click back to the Layout
