Rhino 8 won't reengage

I often have several projects running at once in multiple instances of rhino and in the past doing this typically worked without any issues. I’m now finding on rhino 8, if I go to my windows taskbar and select one of the instances of rhino currently open it will expand the viewport and render the rhino application and any geometry in the file but it won’t allow me to select anything or enter any commands. I end up having to cntl-alt-delete because I have no way to bring it back to life. I am now doing cntl-alt-delete way too much and I lose work because I can’t save. I would say this happens 20% of the time. For example, if I have 5 instances open at least one will be frozen. I will mention this happens on multiple computers. I have a floating license but again this was never a problem with previous versions of rhino and I don’t think it is license or computer related but rather it feels like it might be an issue with the program.

Hi Jason - is there any way to tell whether the frozen one was somehow left in a state that is consistent? (Like in the middle of an operation that takes a while, or a raytraced viewport, etc)

Can you please run SystemInfo in Rhino and copy/paste the results here?

-Pascal

No this typically happens without any operations running. I am simply expanding an instance that was temporarily placed in the background and or minimized. It usually happens after some time has passed as in more than a few hours.

I work with multiple instances of Rhino open every day and I have never experienced this. That is, Rhino windows randomly freezing and being unresponsive just because of being open in the background.

But will keep it in mind if I start seeing it and report back.

@jason_pilarski when you run into such an instance please create a memory dump (instructions: Manually Creating a Memory Dump (DMP File) from an Unresponsive Rhino for Windows [McNeel Wiki] ) for that instance and upload to tech support using Rhino - Upload to Support

Thanks I will definitely do so the next time I experience this issue. I will say it tends to happen with larger file sizes in the 1 - 2 gig range. Also to add another layer of complexity I work using google drive desktop on windows. That might also play a role. I will get the dump info together and hopefully that tells us more. thanks for your help.
