Rhino * freezes after opening

I use daily Rhino 8 but with the latest update, now it freezes instantly after opening. I cannot type any commands anywhere. cannot maximize/minimize - its completely frozen
I have to kill the app from the task manager. Its also not a fault of my computer specifications. What should I do? :frowning:

HI Filip -

Can you get commands to work when you start Rhino in Safe Mode?
-wim

This is what I get when opening rhino8 in safe mode on the other hand. But it steel proceeds to the same screen as with Rhino 8 which is frozen. there is just this additionall pop up. Also I already have tried to install nd uninstall rhino several times. I have updated my drivers and windows. Nothing works

Ok now I managed to open rhino and clicked fastly to “Open” my file i worked on instead of choosing a empty template. Now i have ability to type. Choosing the template freezes my Rhino. I am looking forward to get to know what to type in for you to resolve my issue

Type SystemInfo in the Rhino command line if possible (in safemode if need be) and post the results. Thanks

Bingo.

Go into Device Manager in Windows and see if you have errors on your Nvidia card.

once that is sorted out make sure to set Rhino to High Performance

It says it works properly

I have also followed the thread you sent me and I already had Rhino * on high performance :frowning:

I’d reinstall your nvidia driver with a new driver from nvidia directly and use the advanced install option. then check “clean install” and let it run. restart your machine and try rhino again.

repost your systeminfo after you do this to make sure that the card is in fact being used.

also hybrid machines need to be plugged in when you use rhino… if you unplug them, they tend to revert to the low power intel card and that switch can cause rhino all sort of consternation.

I will do it although I also have Rhino 7 that runs smoothly. I have never had any problem with Rhino 8 before. It happened becuase I updated Rhino 8 and I also updated Windows to windows 24h2. Why is that Rhino 7 is not affected by any of these

This is my rhino 8 systeminfo after all the changes applied :frowning:

But I still need to open rhino through a existing file. I cannot choose any template since it will freeze. If I let RHino just open itself it will also freeze

Thanks, systeminfo is looking good.

Does it freeze in SafeMode?

Hi again. I did what you suggested today. Didn’t work I have the same frozen Rhino app everytime. Could you help me? I would really love to use this program since i paid a full price after the 3 month trial which ironically worked without any problems :frowning:

And yes i have rhino 8 on high performance regarding what @Japhy suggested to do

Rhino 8 opens an existing file and works, but freezes if you try to open using a template file?
That sounds like a template file problem to me.

Where are the templates for Rhino 8 located?
Options > Files

How many templates do you have in Rhino 8?

If more than one template does Rhino 8 freeze if you select any template, or only with certain templates? If only with certain templates upload the template .3dm file.

well. there are few ways of accessing rhino. Just let the program launch - it will open a template. to click ‘new’ where we can choose a template, to choose ‘open’ where we can find our desired file to be open through the file explorer and of course by double-clicking the file anywhere in the laptop. I have tried all these different ways to access Rhino to have at least one sec of freedom to access system info. I managed to do that by clicking ‘open’ and then fastly clicking on my file before rhino runs its template on its own. Well… after all these fixes which I was asked to apply from this thread, no matter in what way I open Rhino it is unresponsive. Just a frozen window. Like a sscrenshot on my laptop’s desktop. So I have no access to system info anymore, no access to settings. Safe mode doesnt work the same way as a normal Rhino. How can I go about it?

I’d try the following:

  1. Close all Rhino instances
  2. With file explorer go to %APPDATA%\McNeel\Rhinoceros\8.0 (copy & paste into the location bar)
  3. Rename settings folder to settings-old-20241130 (or something similar)
  4. Start Rhino

If that didn’t do it you can try renaming the 8.0 folder after you have made sure no Rhino instances are running.

Also, make sure you try repairing your Rhino install if you haven’t done so already (Windows Settings > Apps > Rhino > Modify > Repair)

Oh my god. It worked. I only renamed settings folder to settings-old-20241130. Can i ask you why did it help at all? I mean what type of bug did I have that renaming such folder helped?

Thanks @nathanletwory
