Rhino 8 - Make2d Layer recognition is gone!

Hello,
One of the most disappointing things about the Clipping Drawings has been that the resulting geometry is compressed into a handful of layers and colours assigned by object. This basically contradict most drafting and organization best practices and actually purges relevant and essential information that exist in the models. I can explain why if someone is interested and does not know.

Make2d in Rhino 7 was not ideal, but it did try to split the resulting geometry by the layers of each source element in the model. That way, we could identify in the background information that these to vertical lines were a column and those other two were a wall, and the ones next to it were a façade. I could then turn them on or off, select them, and or assign different printing widths, printing colours etc.

I ‘understand’ that in the rush to release Rhino the ClippingPlanes did not get that feature… yet. But to remove that from the Make2d makes no sense and sends the message that the feature may never arrive to the ClippingPlanes.

Can someone at McNeel confirm this?
Am I missing some option that siwtch that on and off?

@Rajaa, Someone,
Can you confirm this? This is really a setback.

Hi Nuno -

It sounds like in Rhino 7 you used the “Maintain source layers” option, but in Rhino 8 you have set this to either “from input objects” or “By output layers”.

If that’s not it, please describe the issue in clear steps and provide a simple 3dm model that goes along with the instructions.

Hi @Wim,
I am very sorry. You are correct.
I was using an alias with a sequence of commands (on the command line), of which one was make2d, without noticing that the default settings were ‘From input objects’.
I had forgotten these were even options and my frustration in not finding this option in ClippingDrawings made me jump to the conclusion that they were removed from make2D. Apologies.

Is there a similar option for the ClippingDrawings? Is it in the roadmap ahead?
Alternatively, is it in the roadmap to have the Section Styles used also in Make2D?

Thanks, N

I assume you are talking about the background geometry, and how it should be split into more detailed sublayers based on input? Or would the section curves, hatches and solids be split as well?
With projects that typically have 20+ layers, this seems like an extremely cumbersome structure to maintain and manage.
Before going that route, I am interested to understand the workflow, through an example, where this becomes useful. I can see utility for controlling the visibility of the parts of the drawing, but otherwise, all other source properties (from layers or objects, are carried to the drawing output). Anything else I’m missing here?

Added to the list here…

Hi Rajaa,
I am talking both the background and the section, as in Make2d.
It is extremely important. It is up there with having a 0,0,0 as the insertion point for the drawings.
These are just basic best practices of documenting a project and working in a team. Otherwise, editable vectorial drawings are not much more than paper prints.
I can try to explain but it will take a while, so I’ll try to do it in the weekend.
