Rhino 8 is extremely slow to open files

Thank you Steve, will do now.

Thank you,
Steve

Is there a repository of older versions of r8 that i can install until i find a working version?

I’ll send you some links, please let us know which one is working for you. Thanks

Thank you Japhy!

I just tried version “rhino_en-us_8.0.23304.09001” from a coworker and it has NO lag at all.

Hopefully the difference between these two might help.

PS: is there a way to prevent the “download new version message”?

Thank you

I would much rather get you on a more recent build than 8.0 as there are a large number of bug fixes for other issues since that release. Japhy will send you links to more recent builds.

Thank you, I would as well.

v8.5 is running best on my system. (lag free)

Does that mean that the problem started in 8.6?

On my system, it appears to be the case. I was out of the office for about 3 months and didnt notice the problems introduction until i returned and jumped several versions during the update cycle. .

Steve,

Any more insights into a fix for the r8 slowdown on startup?

I installed the latest version available 8.10.24288.13001 and noticed that when I start in SAFE Mode and “drag” files from explorer into Rhino Safe Mode I have NO lag problem. The software is very fast when doing this. ZERO lag.

I do get this warning however
image

Any ideas why this is working so well but running in normal mode has a 10sec lag event, still?

Hi Japhy,

Installed version rhino_en-us_8.11.24254.15001 today.

Same lag issue.

Walt

This is a major clue, particularly since your previous systeminfo didn’t show any 3rd party plugins.

Safe mode is disabling non-critical plugins (3rd party and native) as well as minimal graphics processing.

When are you seeing the warning?

We can disable plugins via File>Properties. Close the file and reopen. You can do this in Standard Rhino or SafeMode.

Thank you Japhy, found the culprit. It is “3Dconnexion 3D Mouse”.

Once turned off the software has no lag on startup.

The Spacemouse version im using is:

Hi Japhy,

I removed the current 3D Spacemouse driver and installed an older version
from 2023. It also has the lag now (did not have the lag in 2023 with either 3dconnexion or Rhino).

In your opinion, is the lag coming from the recent Rhino 3Dconnexion plugin?

Thank you,
Walt

That is a plugin that ships with Rhino, @dale should have some insights.

@wm_c,

I don’t have much to add here.

I have a SpaceMouse Enterprise. With it connected, Rhino 8 for Windows opens the .dwg file you posted nearly instantaneously.

Im using the Spacemouse Pro. It has a 10sec lag on startup of any and every file I open.

Without the spacemouse it’s relatively instant.

NO other program I use the space mouse with has this lag, except for Rhino 8.

Autocad and 3DsMax work the way Rhino 7 and early versions of Rhino 8 did.

As Rhino 8 is my primary tool this has become very frustrating, on a daily basis.
