Rhino 8 is extremely slow to open files

@wm_c,

I don’t have much to add here.

I have a SpaceMouse Enterprise. With it connected, Rhino 8 for Windows opens the .dwg file you posted nearly instantaneously.

Im using the Spacemouse Pro. It has a 10sec lag on startup of any and every file I open.

Without the spacemouse it’s relatively instant.

NO other program I use the space mouse with has this lag, except for Rhino 8.

Autocad and 3DsMax work the way Rhino 7 and early versions of Rhino 8 did.

As Rhino 8 is my primary tool this has become very frustrating, on a daily basis.

wired or bluetooth?

Is there anyone in your office that uses a different Spacemouse model? Would be interesting to know if another model shows the same issues on your machine.

I just swapped my model out with the spacemouse compact and have the identical lag problem.

Hi @wm_c,

I just spend time evaluating the 3dxRhino plug-in source code. And I am not seeing anything that would slow down the opening of files. Note, the 3dxRhino plug-in source code has changed very little between Rhino 7 and Rhino 8.

In running both Rhino 7 and Rhino 8 here, with a SpaceMouse Enterprise plugged in and having the latest 3dxWare (10.9.0.3773) and 3dxWinCore (17.9.0.21038) installed, I am seeing no noticeable time difference in starting Rhino or loading files.

We’re also not hearing these reports from other users. These devices are popular with Rhino users. If file opening slowness were an issue, I would think we’d have heard from other users.

I can understand your frustration. But without any way of reproducing the slowness, I can only assume the issue is localized to your system.

One (final) thing I’d like to try. Launch Rhino and open file file. When Rhino is busy and taking a long time to respond, create a memory dump.

Please send this to me (dale@mcneel.com) using our file upload tool.

https://www.rhino3d.com/upload

Note, please zip the file before sending.

Let’s hope the memory dump will give us a clue as to what Rhino is “busy” doing.

Thanks,

– Dale

Thank you Dale, the DMP file has been created and uploaded as per your instructions.

I look forward to your review.

Hi @wm_c,

Thank you for providing the memory dump. It was very helpful in determining the slowness issue we’ve all been trying to track down.

When the 3dxRhino plug-in loads, it queries Rhino for all of it is toolbar button macros and images so it can build the interface below.

These images also show up on your device if it has an LED screen.

In Rhino 7, toolbar button images were just simple bitmaps. In Rhino 8, toolbar button images are generated from .svg files. I’m assuming the svg-to-bitmap conversion is taking a long time on your system.

I’ll add an advanced settings option that will allow you to disable this, thus buttons in 3dxRhino will only contain text.

https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-83898

Also, the plug-in only does this conversion when Rhino loads. So rather than opening and closing Rhino every time you want to work on a file, just launch Rhino and open files using File > Open.

Thanks,

– Dale

Hi Dale,

Thank you for the review of the provided dump file.

I use the spacemouse pro (no LED screen) and I have “Disable On-Screen Display” checked, so all that time spent building svg files is wasted on me.

A text option would be great.

As for opening my files using the windows “explorer/file>open” that is not a viable option for us.

Due to the filename “wall of text” (thousands of files) we work/view everyday, the dept has developed a custom version of Directory Opus to keep track of the files we visually encounter/crawl through in the course of a days work.

Directory Opus allows us to visually color code all of our files for identification purposes and has superior search, window and filter options. We start the edit of all files by double clicking them in Directory Opus.

Windows explorer is a primitive kludge in comparison to Directory Opus and adds additional time to our workflow, that we dont have with Directory Opus.

Thank you Dale (and your team) for all the provided help with this issue. Support at McNeel is unrivaled by any other software company in my experience. You guys are the best, by a long shot!

Perhaps it’s an option to drag a file from Directory Opus and drop it to a running Rhino?
That’s what I usually do with the standard explorer.

Thanks Charles Ill give that a try. Looks promising.

Hi Dale,

Had a moment to test out SVG files on my other apps and no issues or slowdowns with any other graphic apps on my computer (Adobe) regarding SVG files.

Also I use the Pro version of the spacemouse NOT the enterprise version.

Pro does not have the onboard screen.

I also have the On-Screen Display “Disabled”
image

Does this indicate a misidentification of the hardware? Is that possibly the issue?

Walt

Tried the dragging method with one already open instance of Rhino 8.

No luck, drag and drop method still has the lag on file open.

Im hoping this gets fixed soon.

Hi Dale,

We are a large autocad shop with the exception of myself and roughly 6 or 7 other people (mostly industrial designers) in the US and Canada that have committed to using Rhino as our primary tool in place of autocad.

The use of Rhino and Spacemouse had made the workflow exceptionally fast. Unless of course your Rhino with Spacemouse takes 10 seconds to open on every file. Our IT dept has no interest in helping with the issue as its considered a vendor problem (since spacemouse is not a problem with Autocad 2024).

As one of the advocates that pushed for the Rhino 8 update from Rhino 7, I have now come to realize that was premature. As our version r8 files are not reverse compatible with r7, my only choice is to go back to Autocad for the majority of my daily work.

Once you have developed the “muscle” memory of using Rhino and Spacemouse together, no longer using Spacemouse is a non-starter. Add a 10 sec startup delay to every file and my Rhino workflow becomes a no-brainer.

@wm_c - If you are using the SR 13 Release Candidate, try turning off (i.e False) this advanced setting.

Thank you Dale,

I just installed RC13 and its better, here’s what i have observed:

Within the first second the spacemouse is working. For the next 5 seconds the spacemouse
and drawing freeze. Unlike before, the freeze does not lock (grey out) the screen.

So after file open, Im ready to edit within 6 seconds.

So much better than R11 or R12
